Reviewed live as a wheat IPA per the label. Expectations are above average given the Mosaic hops used coupled with this brewery's high reputation. Served cold into a mason jar in Kuopio, Finland.
BOTTLE: 33cl. Brown glass. Unbranded pry-off crown cap. Appealing colourful label. Best before: 11/15.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: White colour. Frothy and overly active, with concerning high flocculence. Retention is above average - ~3-4 minutes. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.
BODY: Dull pale copper. Not clean, clear, or vibrant. I see no yeast or sediment. Its haziness and opacity is probably lent by the wheat.
Looks okay for a wheat IPA. Not too inviting or attractive.
AROMA: Subtle blueberry manifests in classic Mosaic hop fashion. I get the pale malts, but none of the wheat. Clean barley. The fruity component of the Mosaic is wonderful, but it's missing fresh floral notes.
In any case, this seems well-hopped - rich is rare in a Finnish IPA. Suggests an enjoyable balanced IPA with plenty of interesting subtle blueberry.
Aromatic intensity is average.
TASTE & TEXTURE: It has the subtle blueberry promised by the aroma, but it suffers from overly bitter resins coupled with a coating and almost parching mouthfeel. Smooth and wet, but too bitter and extinguishing to be refreshing. Aptly medium-bodied. Needs more of a pale malt (or even caramalt) backbone to lend the sweetness necessary to quell the hop bitterness. Or, you know, if they got rid of the wheat and just stuck with tried and true pale malts. None of the usual benefits of wheat manifest here; the malt foundation just seems weak.
Above average depth of flavour. Average flavour duration and intensity. It's imbalanced in that it leans too far towards hop bitterness, but that's a refreshing change from most tragically underhopped Finnish (I)IPAs. Enjoyable in spite of its imbalanced, with sufficient complexity and subtlety - which will intrigue the discerning drinker.
It's overcarbonated, though, and there isn't a harmony of texture to taste - though the former is a decent complement to the latter.
OVERALL: Highly drinkable in spite of its imbalance, this offering from Beer Hunter's is exactly what the Finnish market needs in an IPA, and it will please both the discerning drinker and the Mosaic hop enthusiast. Those (like me) who are desperate for a good IPA in Finland and have gotten tired of the wanting schlock usually available at Alko will adore this. Definitely one of the finest IPAs brewed in Finland, but not a beer that compete with style paragons in the international arena. Well worth trying. I'll be buying this again.
