A real fizzer, fill glass with frothy head.
Brett (?) on nose, but taste is drier duller and tarter than nose... BUT ... Overall a very light tasting ale and for the price it doesn't cut it.

A tart, citric and refreshing ale that is a welcome addition (along with the whole brewery and its focus) to the Australian beer scene. Obviously not to the 'American Blonde Ale' style but it doesn't try to be either - it defies categorising. It might not be complex but it tastes great and is enjoyable to drink.

L. looks great.. lots of bubblyness.. amber body..
S. citric, malty aroma
T. puckering astringency... more citric acidity.. lingering lemony bitterness
F. gassy in the mouth..
O. lives up to its name.. proper refreshing. label clearly states it's a souring, evolving farmhouse ale.. but kinda one dimensional lemon flavor. pretty good beer though.

Appearance - 4.0
Hazy light amber with an off-white head which retains well.

Aroma - 2.0
Cidery, little in the way of malt or hops.

Taste - 2.0
Also rather thin and cidery, low to moderate bitterness with a definite sour note and a very dry finish.

Mouthfeel - 3.5
Light body, moderate to lively carbonation.

Overall - 2.5
It's hard to decide whether the tart, cidery character of this beer is deliberate or an accidental flaw. Either way, not my cup of tea (or pint of ale for that matter).

Lightly malty with some fruity esters. A little bit of spicy hop. A touch dull.

Fairly clear pale gold colour with a creamy white head. Head retention could be improved but there is a little lacing.

Initially a touch grainy with a hint of malt. This flows through the barest hint of hops to a slightly tart finish. The tartness does not work well.

Medium body with moderate carbonation. A little bit astringent.

Not a great beer for me. The flavour is a bit off and the astringency isn't all that nice.

Pours amber with a large, lasting head.
Nose shows resinous and grassy hops, with light sweet clean malt in the background.
Flavours include more clean malt with some hops that can only be described as sharp and clean, with a faint bitterness following.
Soft, creamy carbonation.

Tried on tap at Sydney's Local Taphouse US Beer SpecTapular.

Pours a very cloudy light gold colour. Almost sewerage in colour. Almost no head. Some filmy lacing carb minimal.

Very sour cidery nose, lots of green apples and a light astringent character. It's not bad but it's not terribly beery.

Also very sour on the palate, almost verging into lambic sourness. Cider characters are dominant. And it has a really astringent sour back palate. Some yeasty notes. Mouthfeel clean but thin. Not a huge fan. If it were marketed differently I might approve (The "Two Metre Tall Partially Lambic Weirdness" springs to mind), but I don't believe it's meant to taste like this - infection all the way.

Overall, not terribly impressive. It's just sour and weak. Not very pleasant. It's a chore to finish even my 60ml sample.

Tried this as a leadup to Rogue XS Imperial Stout at the Local Taphouse.

Poured a nice cloudy straw colour, slight apricot tinge with humble off-white head. Slightly pale, otherwise nice, of course I do like a good hazy beer.

Nose is very resiny with a long drawn-out bitterness and lots of tart citrus, an orange liqueury kind of character, yeah bitterness is OK but I don't like it. Yeah, I'd say this is OK.

Taste is unpleasant, very tart with a strong vinegar astringency and maybe some slight lemon hints, but nothing particularly leaping out at me. It's a mishmash of infected-style flavours, and has no backbone behind the sourness, just tastes like there wasn't enough malt, and the yeast just sours up everything. Pretty thin, watery mouthfeel backs up my idea that there's just no body here. Pretty bad overall, not good to taste, and not good to drink. Might cleanse my palate, only because it kills my tastebuds.

a) Nice, heavy off-white head. Slight haze, orange with pale yellow highlights. Little or no carbonation.
s) Citrus, honeydew melon. Sweet biscuity note.
f) Spicy, waxy/perfumy hops. Lime zest, sherbet lolly, slight nuttiness. Crisp bitterness and a lingering hop flavour. Kinda like English Pale meets Witbier....or is it American Pale Ale meets English Bitter ??
m) Light & refreshing, well attenuated, but doesn't linger for long.
d) "A distinctly different refreshing REAL ALE" says the label. There are many arguments out there about what defines "real".... nonetheless it's a nice beer.

I initially doubted calling this American Blonde, but the fruitiness and what I perceive to be a wheat component would back it up. Not sure what the brewers intended...

** UPDATE 16/12/2007 **
Consumed a bottle last night that was very "funky". The smell was a strong reminder of Orval. I believe it to be a Brett infection, which in this instance created a point of interest, but is a flaw in the process. I haven't changed the scores, though.

A - Hazy golden colour with a couple of centimetres of white head that slowly dissipates. Little bit of sporadic lacing.
S - Fruity, yeasty esters.
T - A bit of a pale malt flavour. Some floral hop presence but quite subdued.
M - Low to medium bodied with fairly carbonation.
D - Drinkable but fairly boring. Probably wouldn't bother getting again.

I had heard many good things about this new brewer from Tassie, and was more than happy to grab some of their beers straight off the pallet the other day. I expected to be underwhelmed but ended up being pleasantly surprised by this beer.

Nothing out of the ordinary in the in the appearance, it had all of the characteristics of an aussie pale ale. Deeper golden color, slightly fading head, the positive being that its cloudy, which I always like. Very fruity on the nose, dare I say it, plenty of apple aromas present, with some hints of toffee and a good hoppy blast at the end. It has a solid but not huge malt presence, again, lots of apples in the flavor with some zesty elements. It finishes with a clean and crisp hop finish which is rather tasty. I don't know if i'd be calling this a cleansing ale, despite the nature of the hops, as it's quite full bodied for an ale of this type. There was also a substantial amount of sludgy yeast at the bottom of my glass once I was done. I don't know if I could drink a heap of these in one go, as its fairly sweet.

All in all a pretty good beer from these fellows. I'll certainly be drinking it again, even though it is on the pricey side. Not really 'cleansing' but tasty and enjoyable all the same.

a: golden, very hazy color with some carbonation on edges with a huge head that retains at an impressive level throughout
s: yeast smell with some citrus hints
t: first taste not impressive, but subsequent drinks get better as the yeast really comes out & reminds very slightly of a light belgian style with citrus hints
m: very good carbonation throughout and true to its name - cleansing especially on hot days, light to medium body
d: overall a pretty good ale that i'd like to try again
