So........if you know Shepherd Neame, then you know you shouldn't expect too much from this beer. That said, I often see their bottles on the shelf and think, "that looks like it might be a good beer." Some lessons are learned more slowly than others.
However, on this particular instance, I was pleasantly surprised. Was it great? Heavens no. Was it okay? Yeah, it was. Basically a run-of-the-mill English bitter. Don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed.

Clear 500ml bottle on 9th Aug 2013 at my parents: poured into a chalice (twice).

Good amber coat to the brew, a small white head hung around on both pours' but not for very long.

Malt front to the nose and taste, caramel and toffee notes to be precise. Mild floral and fruit hints in the taste, but the aroma is all malts.

A bit thin body wise, but OK for a cheap supermarket beer, which is what this beer really is.

Cask at Westminster's Arms, London:

Pours copper with an off-white head that becomes a bubbly patch. Lacing sticks.

The smell is caramel, with citric/lemony and leafy/earthy bitterness.

The taste is of caramel/toffee with some orange marmalade. Leafy bitterness, citric/lemony tartness round it out. It has a bitterish, minty aftertaste that is very refreshing.

It is very creamy in a medium body.

This has a nice character. The citric touch stands out. Refreshing, tasty and well-balanced. Nice use of the hops while maintaining a firm malt backbone.
