Nut-brown to bronze with puffy cratered oatmeal beige head that holds but leaves few trails. Sour grain, candy apple and tobacco leaf nose.
Caramel nut popcorn up front, a sour hit, then dried orange rind and spice cookie hops.
Mulchy finish and tart linger. Watery, tinny, some fizz.

Overroasted peanut flavors dominate. Far too thin an autumn seasonal, too. However, it does do well against Welsh rarebit.

If I hadn't paid just 1.50 at Lidl for this, I'd be pretty annoyed. SN continue to champion medicrity.

A 500ml clear glass bottle with a BB of Oct 2012. I'm a little behind with the seasons - still, better late than never.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. A clear copper hue with low carbonation. Produces a large off-white head of frothy foam that lasts for a minute or so before reducing to a thin surface layer. Aroma of roasted malt with hints of burnt grain, nuts, brown sugar and leafy stewed hops.

Tastes of roasted malt with a bitter finish. Notes of burnt grain and stewed leaves. Dry, with a coarse, unbalanced bitternes. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, but watery - doesn't live up to the flavour. Astringent; dries the palate. Harsh aftertaste of stewed hops and roasted malt.

A rather poor effort. Smells OK, but the flavour lacks depth and balance. It's all roasted grain and bitter hops, when a maltier, less astringent character would have been better. In addition, the mouthfeel is far too thin for the style. There are better beers out there - avoid.

Clear 500ml bottle: well in date when poured into my Abbot Ale glass tankard on 19th Aug 2012.

Reddy brown body with an off-white head: malts rule the roost here both in the aroma and the taste.

The body was thin and a bit 'fizzy' in my eyes, pleasant enough but lacking depth of flavour.

Yet again, another cheap supermarket brew without any 'craft' from Shepherd Neame: I've been kind with my scoring.
