Paris 31/3 2026. 50 cl can from local mini-market close to Gare de Lyon, Paris 12e. Red can in the usual Amsterdam brand design with an old sailboat seen from the front.
Pours clear yellow with a small white head. Stable. Settles as a 0,4 cm thick layer of foam covering the surface of the beer. Crawling up the sides of the beer. Substantial lacing.
Aroma is moderately intense with a sweet odor of pale malts mingling with metallic alcohol. Bread and caramel. Sour grains. A little sharp - but not too bad.
Light carbonation. Slightly thick, oily, soft, almost flat texture.
Flavor is medium intense with a strong sweetness followed by a moderately strong bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet with A boozy undertone. Lingers for a while. Finish is sharp and a bit unpleasant.
Malty, sweet and imperial. But tolerable.

Actually brewed in Holland by Dutch Export Breweries at the Grolsche Bierbrouwerij.
This is a simple, well more like a crude beer. Pale malt, heavy and sweet, like a barley-wine. Minimal hop presence. Most high alcohol beers suffer from the same thick, crude, one-dimensional sweetness. It's heavy and unpleasant like hard-core pornography or heavy metal music.
Is there a difference between something like Sierra Nevada BigFoot and this? Well, maybe there is - I prefer this shit to that shit.

Tall dark brown half-liter bottle with a red and gold label with all English lettering and an old world map, a couple of sailing ships, and the bust of some 18th century explorer. Circling the head of this navigator is the slogan: "In this beer we trust stronger." OK. Ingredients conform to the purity law. Bottled on 7/29/03, I opened it on 10/14/03, well within the 9 month "best before" limit.
Clear reddish gold under a thin fizzy off-white head that disappeared quickly and without a trace. The nose is somewhat sweet, not really malty, but not really soda either. The mouth is prickly and heavy with sweetness. The taste confirms the sweet theme, rather like raspberry, which attempts to cover the alcohol and a bit of mild malt. The sweet masks the hops until the finish, when a bit of bitter bite comes through. The finish combines the sweet and the bitter, but the sweet wins the battle. For a strong lager, it's not bad.
