July 2007: On tap in Riga. Golden colour, moderate head. Moderate pilsener aroma. Typical pilsener flavour, maybe slightly more malty than the bulk of them, with a certain hoppy bitterness.

Bought this in my local "East block shop" came in a clear bottle with yellow labelling.

Look; Pours light amber, with plenty of carbonation and creates a great 1 finger head which sticks around, bubbles are continuous, looking good...

Smell; Light Grainy and hoppy, nothing special, smells like a typical euro pils.

Taste; Awful, taste cheap and grainy, slight hints of pear / apple, thought i was drinking strongbow at one point. Chemical finish, not nice...

Feel; fresh at first but its like drinking a cheap supermarket own brand mouth wash, lingers in your mouth.

Overall; one of the worst beers/lagers i've had in a while, I'd rather drink Budweiser (US) or Miller than this stuff. i don't know if its a bad batch, but i wont be getting any again nor recommending it.

Boring beer that barely tastes anything. The bitterness is a bit metallic wich is not especially nice.

Light, slightly amber straw colour with a small white head on the top. Very much a cheap pale lager in appearance.

A weird, skunky aroma coupled with some sweet butter, corn and bread as well as some cheap lager hops and malts.

Sweet malts kick things off along with some butter and vanilla, neither what I was expecting from this to begin with. There is a slight spicy tanf and a lot of corn to round things off with.

Quite light with a slightly spicy palate and medium carbonation levels. It is also quite plain and unexciting with a hint of alcohol right at the end and some grain too.

A poor, cheap pale lager and not as good as I recall from my time in Latvia a few years ago although that could be down to my palate changing quite a bit since then.

The Legend of Zelta, anyone? Ok. Soooo… out of bottle this beer was a 24k gold color with one finger of white head. The retention was mediocre and the lacing scant. The aroma was of some macro grains, crystal malt and a little bit of green hops. The flavors were slightly more malty than I expected and better than many of the same style. Nothing amazing mind you, but I did taste pale malt, sweet malt and a pleasant graininess. It was all rather washed out and neutral but nothing offensive at the same time. The mouthfeel was a bit watery however, the body light/medium and the carbonation average. An ok beer and good for the style, but the style basically sucks so there’s only so much one can expect.

Appearance pours a light hazy golden yellow with a dissapating crisp head. Smell of light malts, corn and hop aroma. Taste follows the aroma with a light sweetness and finishing clean. Mouthfeel is light with good carbonation. An easy drinking Eastern Euro lager with an interesting pull cap I've never seen before.

Poured from a 500 ml bottle into a pilsner glass. The bottle is a classic old-style brown bottle that is blown and stamped with the Aldaris crest. Definitely the kind of bottle you'd see 30 years ago, but not so much today. The bottle alone bumps the appearance up a notch.

Pours a slightly hazy pale yellow with an ample white, frothy head that reduces rather quickly, leaving behind a fair amount of sticky, spiderweb-like lacing. Very tiny bubbles slowly ride from the bottom.

Has a very bready, malty aroma, almost yeasty. Think raw bread dough, sitting in a bowl on the counter waiting to rise.Maybe a hint of lemon underneath, but it is real faint.

Taste, unfortunately, is more in line with the smell than the look. Bready and yeast, with a sharpness that his mid-tongue that reminds me of lye. As I drink more, I get more of a grainy, grassy quality, but in the "I just ate some grass" way, not in an earthy way.

Light bodied, though the bready nature of this beer gives it a bit of a thicker feel that is negated by the sharp, almost metallic feeling mid-tongue.

Chalk this one up to my continuing quest to sample as many bottled, imported brews as Central Europe has to offer. I believe this is my first Latvian beer, so I can safely say it was also the best. However, if you're looking for a good Euro-Pale lager, you may wish to look elsewhere.
