A-Opaque dark mahogany brown w/thin off-white head that exhibited mild retention.
S-Rich, sweet toasted malt, faint hops, coffee, cocoa. Not overly complex, but delicious.
T-Sweeter toasted malt, rich coffee and chocolate, faint hops in finish, and a sweet coffee aftertaste.
M-Not too rich-bodied for style. Smooth and creamy w/perfectly modest carbonation.
D-A porter that leaves nothing to be desired, and another good delivery from Ale Asylum.

Name changed to Contorter Porter (already reported), and now available in bottles.

Very nearly black with a sturdy beige capping.
Dark chocolate aromas with underlying steely hops.
Enters into the mouth with toasted grains, bakers chocolate, and cigar ash. It gains some sweeter nuances, but they tend towards the indistinct and continuously chocolately. A light milkiness precedes the hop closure of black tea and wrought iron. While not huge in individual hop flavor, the bitterness is there.
Medium bodied with a round, plump feel. CO2 is limited and it's glassy smooth.
It's not particularly dynamic or notable. But its a solid English-modeled session porter.

This brew poured into a pint glass was as black as coal and as thick as oil. This has a minimal cream head with thick sticky legs. The smell of this was of rich malts, almonds, chocolate, and coffee. My first taste was of wonderful malts balanced by bitter sweet chocolate notes. This was a thicker brew with moderate carbonation. I really enjoyed this beer but don't think I could sit and drink more than 2 because of the richness and thickness of it. I was very well brewed and worth the 1 1/2 hour drive to Mad-town to try AA's line-up!

Pitch black with creamy dark head. Smells of smoky wood, coffee, chocolate, slight hint of oats and caramel. Initial taste is dark and rich, strong coffee flavor, some slight spices and citrus in the background. Reminds me much of a dark Columbian roast with a little cream and sugar. Still, though, it's primarily dry in the English style. Overall very well-balanced and again the typical Asylum style of being very well-crafted with a hint of modern deviance.

Typical appearance with a brown-black body and creamy tan head. Average head and retention. The nose is a touch smokey with a hint of fruit. Initially, it was served too cold (as is the case in many places), and it seemed a bit over-carbed. As it sat and warmed, however, it became much smoother in the mouth. The flavor is fuller, with more fruit than the nose suggests, and lots of deep roasted chocolate. Some buttery diacetyl rounds it out nicely, and it's definitely English in character! A very firm bitterness backs it, and it finishes dry with some dark malt acidity, lingering fruit, and a bitter and roasted burnt edge.

Pours a nice big head that holds a lacing. Color is black, black as night. The smell is slightly roasted and I thought I had a slight hint of chocolate tones too. The taste is nice, very roasty and nice. Not as good as the sample I had, which was smooth and slightly roasty with good chocolate tones. The mouthfeel is a little overcarbonated, but still is good. Overall I will definetly try this brew again, I liked it.

From what I recall of my sample tray....

A: A nice nearly black brew, with ruby highlights when held to the light. A thin off-white, tanish head that left nice lacing.

S: Low roasted aroma, a little caramel sweetness. Left a little to be desired IMO.

T: Initally moderate bittersweet, then low roasted grains, and finally some chocolate flavor. Low hop bitterness, wouldn't have minded a little more there.


M: Rather creamy, medium bodied, appropiate carbonation. Well done.

D: The drinkability was rather high for a porter.

Overall: A good beer. Like I said, a little more on the nose would be nice. And perhaps a bit more bitterness. Still worth a buy if you're there!

Pretty, near black body with purple walnut hues and a thin khaki head that’s gone before you can take a sniff. Aromas of coffee, sour burnt malts, caramel, and hints of cherries. Tastes primarily of burnt coffee with a decent amount of dried cherries. Body is really light and watery. Other flavors of caramel, nuts, fried caramel, ginger, and figs enter but are totally in cohesive. This beer feels like if you let it sit everything would dissolve out into layers of black, red, brown, and clear liquid. Drinkable but perhaps my least favorite of Ale Asylum’s otherwise stellar lineup.
