Comes in a standard-shaped green half-liter bottle with a fairly non-descript label. Zhigulovskoye is a common brand name in Russian. None of them are any good, though (see various reviews), so I wasn't hoping for much. Ingredients conform to the purity law. Bottled on 11/12/03, I opened it on 11/26/03.
Off to a good start, as the pour looks nice. A snow white 1.5-fingered contoured head establishes itself above clear gold, and sticks around for a while. Even leaves a few spots of lace. The nose is grainy, with a touch of metal. The mouth is light and prickly, lacking the sour this style normally produces. The opening taste has a bit of that sourness, but so muted as to actually be pretty pleasant. There's lots of sweet malt to balance the sour. This combination is followed by a bit of metallic hops, but not overly harsh, with a definite flowery tone to it. The aftertaste recalls some sour along with the bitter. This is one of the few Zhigulovskoyes that I've actually managed to finish. No need for another, mind you, but it was drinkable.
