Afanasy beers come from Tver, Russia, formerly known as Kalinin. I tried it during a visit to Tallinn, Estonia.
Pours pale yellow. The head is reasonable. The taste is bland, slightly metallic. Very little character to this brew but it's not offensive. Overall, pretty ordinary bland Euro lager.

Brau Service recently launched a new line "premium" brews. The name is as misleading in Russian as it is in English. Nothing "premium" about this brew. Comes in a clear 46 cl bottle in the trademark cone shape with a gold and black label on the neck (only) featuring the trademark sailing ship. Ingredients include rice and sugar. Best before 7/1/05, I didn't get around to trying it until 8/6/05. I don't think that mattered.
Poured a clear light gold under a 1/2 finger white head that faded very quickly. No lace. The nose features corn and barley. The mouth is light and reasonably prickly. The taste opens with a jolt of sugar sweetness, followed by rice and some bad watermelon. There are no discernible hops here. Indeed, there is much in terms of redeeming qualities at all. The finish reminds of moldy bread, chased by a slight metallic hop impression. I'll stick to their "standard" products, thanks.
