Pops open with a large "pow!" from the 33.8 fl oz flip-top bottle (to my eyes, a bit larger than a caguama). The bottle -- at least the English-translated part -- announces this as a "Lager Unfiltered Pasteurized Beer," and the initial pour seems to confirm that. An extremely hazy, orange-tinted brew pours into the glass, accompanied by a scraggly head that soon fades down to a respectable lacing. Unfiltered, indeed.
The aroma is intriguing, with fresh yeast, honey, a bit of unfermented wort, and a kiss of noble hops at the back. It smells a bit sweeter than I might hope for from this style, but not remarkably so.
The taste is -- relief! -- very dry indeed, with hints of hay, orange blossom, and a distinctly crisp, bitter finish. Smooth, inviting, and affable on the palate. The flavor is slightly thin and watery in the middle, most likely due to the 4.5% ABV. But there is real thought and structure here, and, from the looks of the giant bottle and the profile, you're supposed to be able to drink a lot of this.
Mouthfeel is also strong, with full scrubbing carbonation and a pleasant finish. While the flavor can be thin at points (see note above), the body does not suffer from similar defects.
All in all, this is a very pleasant tipple, and I'd happily put a few of these on the table when serving a big, country, Russian feast. A very pleasant surprise.
