fun fact: This was the lowest (by 0.1%) ABV beer in my fridge today.

Served in a craft pub glass. Beer pours very dark black, with only the slightest tinge of red. Forget IPA, the aroma has a great roasty note, like a stout, with milder notes of coffee/cappuccino. Flavor adds hops to the mix, with herbal bitterness perfectly complementing the bitterness of the burnt grain malt. A high volume of both, that is -- these are bold flavors. Carbonation is a little high for my tastes, especially given the heaviness of the style. I was expecting a Cascadian Dark Ale but this is more like a Cascadian Dry Stout. I'm a fan.

Pours like a porter: black body, head the colour of almond meat. Round, good lacing,

Smells like... The first thing that jumps to my mind is the charcoal from a water drum. Grains and roast dominate, a little burnt on the back end. As I keep digging my nose in, the grains become more and more dominant. The immediate aroma brings back deep memories of childhood sitting up, but the more I explore it, the more that fades into just the simple components of the beer, and the spell is broken.

You may be surprised to learn this, but the taste is largely roasted grain. There's a little bitter chocolate interspersed in there, and some mild hoppy bitterness on the tail,

Good carbonation level, medium-thin on the mouthfeel, dry on the finish.

It lists itself as a black IPA, but that is not how I would describe it in a blind taste. It is a tasty and well crafted brew, but don't go in thinking IPA with roasty malts etc. Try it without the preconceptions of style, simply on the standards of how it tastes and how much you enjoy drinking it and I think you will enjoy it more

Served in tulip. Poured a solid black color with about 3/4 of an inch of light brown head that had decent retention and OK lacing. The aroma featured a nice amount of roast and good grains. The beer didn't really have a large hop presence.

The taste was very much the same as the aroma, roasty, grains and malt and was lacking much in the way of hops. The body was full, smooth, even and easy to drink. Drinkability was pretty good, as I mentioned, smooth and easy to drink. Overall, a solidly average brew, worth trying when you see it.

NOTE: I took notes and wrote up this review believing that this beer was a Stout. If you read this review and imagine I'm talking about a stout, the beer comes off fairly well. Imagine my surprise when I found out the brewery call this a CDA. If I reviewed this beer to the CDA style, it would have gotten lower scores. As I enjoyed the beer, I decided to give the higher scores.

Thanks to someone for sharing this at the May Freetail bottle release.

The beer pours a dark brown to black color with a tan head. The aroma is what I expected. I get some medium roasted malt and a little bit of chocolate, as well as a big dose of pine from the hops.

The flavor follows suit. The pine from the hops goes fairly well with the bitter roasted malt and light chocolate. The bitterness from the hops and malts make the beer fairly bitter overall.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Poured from a 22 o. bomber to a standard pint glass (this review from notes taken 8/5/11).

A - Poured thick and syrupy. Rich and opaque dark brown-to-black. Espresso colored foamy 1/2-finger head with some large bubbles. Moderate retention and light lacing. Shines cherry red when held up to the light.

S - Strong semi-sweet chocolate prominent at first, followed by a blast of malt and a whiff of coffee. Spiced up with a flash of Worcestshire.

T - Smoky dark chocolate and coffee flavor, flash of heat right at the beginning. Medium malt flavor becomes noticeable over the smoky base. Mild baker's chocolate bitterness at the back of the tongue, finished with mild smoky coffee and chocolate.

M - Thick and creamy, heavy body. Sizzly middle of the tongue carbonation. BItterness at the back of the tongue.

D - I first tried this beer in June. This bottle is smokier than I remember the last being, and is missing some of the piney hoppiness of the first bottle. However, this bottle would be a great winter warmer or early spring beer. It had a great body, and it's still excellent.

Harmon Brewing Company--Black Tartan IPA--Five Different Malted Barleys Brewed To Make A Stout Hoppy Like An IPA--2011 22 oz. Bottle. 6.40% ABV. 80 IBU's. (3.75 / 5.0) CDA--Cascadian Dark Ale? Thick pour. Lacy rocky 1/2"" espresso head thins quickly. Dark bronze red pour turns opaque dark black color. Rich roasted chocolate espresso hoppy Stout front. Creamy cloying mellow sweet thick burnt not bitter dark chocolate malt flavor. Smooth mild sweet creamy textured Stout body. Smooth slightly crusty mild hop spice end. Very hoppy Stout. Tough to classify as an IPA due to overpowering Stout flavors. Sampled 3/28/2011. Purchased for $5.50 at PCC--Fremont, Seattle on 3/17/2011.

22 oz. bottle purchased at 99 Bottles consumed in The Big with beer homeboy 4. 7.11 poured into Piraat tulip.

1/2 finger brown head fairly quick dissipation with minimal lacing. Dark brown almost black opaque body no visible carbonation even when held up close to bright light. Huge roasted malt presence in the nose, a bit of espresso but no chocolate balanced with resiny hops and a bit of citrus notes. Taste mirrors nose, the roasted malt and resiny hops are nicely in balance and not subtle at all on either count, the grapefruit notes are subsumed. Mouthfeel is a bit on the light side of medium, a bit of effervescence noticeable on the tip of tongue, not sticky. This may be closer to a hoppy porter, but this is certainly one of the better CDAs I've had, and I'll seek this out again next time I'm in WA. Worth checking out.

This was one of the better black IPA's I've had. Nice chocolate and coffee taste to it and a bitterness that is not overwhelming. Drinkability was quite good. I could easily down a bomber of this stuff. From what I've had so far,this is definitely Harmon's best brew.

A: Poured jet black with good carbonation, plenty of bubbles and a nice dirty white head

S: Nose is plenty of pine, coffee, floral notes

T: Taste is some coffee, chocolate and pine, floral notes

M: Mouthfeel is nice, medium bodied, not much bittering as something like Pt Defiance but enough.

D: I could have a few of these, over and over however, this beer did not hold up well in my growler. Fresh from tap is the way to go!

On draught at Harmon, Black Tartan is black with a light tan head that leaves nice lace rings.

Smell is pretty chocolaty, not much hops

Taste is the same. This is a porter. And don't get me wrong, Harmon makes some of the best porter in the NW. But this is not a black IPA. I had two, just to watch the handle they pulled the second one from. There some mintyness that I associate with fuggels.

Mouthfeel is very full, some creaminess, but on the dried side from the ABV, which I'd guess is around 6.5%.

Drinkability is pretty good, a tasty porter. Not a black IPA though, if they were going for big hop character, then they failed. But I don't feel the need to ding much for what is otherwise a good beer .
