In throwback fashion, an old school balance of malt and hops give a uniquely American craft spin on the classic British red ale.
Pouring expectedly amber, Treasure Island Amber carries a mildly tarnish froth with firm withstanding along with a nutty, toasty and caramelized scent. Candied nuttiness, bread crust and a sweeter honey tone gives the impression of granola and cracker jacks candies at the onset of the session.
Then as the hops rise to greet the malts, they do so with a Pacific Northwest taste of grapefruit, orange peel and a hint of pineapple. And as the malts start to fade, the hops develop into a balancing bitter taste of pine resins, fresh cut grass and fruit peels to finish slightly peppery and bitter.
Medium bodied and bitter-sweet in balance, the ale finishes eve keel and mostly refreshing with only mild hints of graininess and astringency. Still a refreshing, off-clean and enjoyable session for those of us who cut our beer loving teeth on such "microbrewery" flavors.
