This is brewed with Witbier yeast, according to the label, but the tangy fruitiness and relative strength makes it taste like a Tripel to me. Beautiful clear yellow color, as long as you don't stir up the sediment in the bottle. Plenty of white foam in the Affligem chalice. Creamy carbonation on the tongue. Long fruity aromas.
The flavor starts with sweet apple (Jonagold) on the lips. The yeasty taste is just funky enough, and dries out the mouthfeel while still leaving some sweetness. The tart apple flavor with that rich Belgian note provides the right balance. It's that perfect kind of fermenting cider taste only with the malt giving it more substance and less acidity.
This is actually a tremendous Tripel, tasty and extremely drinkable. This must be the best brew from the Rogue family ever, and who knew they made anything like a Tripel? From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Pioneer Market in La Conner.
