This was a deep black beer with a three quarter inch tan had that retained around the rim of the thick glass chalice. The smell itself was intoxicating with huge coffee and spicy anise aromas. It smells dry and rooty and complex. The taste is massive. Huge waves of deeply roasted barley malts impart licorice coffee sweetness with a constant reigning in by spicy and herbal bitter hops. There is a definite alcohol warming and sharpness from the high abv %. The mouthfeel is creamy and dense and alcoholic. This is such an outstanding beer, but not a session beer by any means. This is a once-a-visit brew.
