Had this at Brouwer's at the tail end of their BigWood festival - 40 Wood-aged beers, oh yeah!
Served in a snifter, black as night with a quickly receding cap of beige foam. The aroma of this thing is unreal. Huge amounts of vanilla, wood, anise, spice and some porter roastiness.
A velvety, medium body brings a strong bourbon character: strong vanilla-bean sweetness, like toasted-marshmallow with a dry woody character quick to follow. Rich, roasted grains fill out the rest of the flavor profile with only the slightest herbal edge of hops. Molasses and dark fruit notes are throughout. The finish manages to be sweet with bourbon and dry like a porter making for incredible drinkability.
This beer continued to amaze with each sip, so I ordered another. Aged for nearly a year in a Bourbon barrel, this beer was definitely bourbon-forward, but the Porter's body and character were not overwhelmed creating something very special. Cheers to the brewer, oh to have this again!
