Poured from a 16 ounce undated can into a snifter at 50 degrees.

Look- Black, opaque, dark brown creamy head, above average head retention and lacing.

Smell- Roasted oats, nutty, slight chocolate, slight coffee, medium strength of scent.

Taste- Roasted malt, slight coffee, slight chocolate, between medium and high strength of flavor.

Feel- Between medium and full body, average carbonation, very highly creamy, mildly sweet, highly bitter, mildly mouth warming, mildly mouth coating.

Overall- Black and opaque with above average head retention and lacing. The nose was mostly toasted malt with some faint notes of chocolate and coffee. The flavor was roasted malt with coffee and chocolate character the most noticeable. Feel was between medium and full body with a great creamy texture and mild mouth warming and coating properties. Overall this beer was a solid American Stout providing an average drinking experience.

Poured from 16oz can into a dimpled mug. No date on the can, but I picked this up at the brewery just a few weeks ago.

Appearance: deep, dark brown hue with a body mostly impenetrable to the light; head is a finger of creamy tan foam.

Smell: a little on the sweet side, with a nice carameliness and a little bit of roast. Not too bad.

Taste: more roastiness here than in the aroma, which helps offset the sweetness. There's a bit of a vegetal hop quality here as well, which often crops up in dark beers. Not bad, although not the most original thing out there.

Mouthfeel: medium, or medium-rich body, with a decent carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: this is a pretty middle-of-the-road craft stout. Nothing particularly wrong with it, and nothing particularly outstanding about it.

22oz bottle served in a pint glass. I'd purchased this earlier in the year, but it outlasted the winter season in my fridge, and today it's just cool and wet enough to really demand a heavy stout. Beer is slick black and completely opaque, with a nice brown head. Nutty aroma of well roasted malts. Flavor brings on a big load of grainy bitterness, blackened malt suggests black coffee. At this temperature the mouthfeel is neither creamy nor thin, but is perfectly acceptable, and not overly carbed. What really sets this beer apart is the balance and layers upon layers of malty grain flavors. The little bit of extra age on this bottle didn't hurt a bit.

 

 

 

Thanks to BellinghamBeerQuokka for helping me fill in this gap. A nice, solid stout with that didn't have too much roast in either the nose or palate. Full yet smooth body. Easy drinkability. Right now the town of Winthrop is in the middle of some terrible wild fires. I hope everyone, including the brewery is safe.

Pours a deep black with a creamy mocha head. Smaller than I would expect, but leaves decent lacing as it disappears down my gullet. The aroma hits as soon as you pop the lid: creamy sweet chocolate. Roasty and smoothe. Really inviting.

Starts off with a smoothe incline of roast bordering-on-but-never-quite-reaching char. Hints towards acrid coffee, but with all the harsh acidity stripped, so you there’s no sharp bite to it, just the backing flavour. Moves into layers of sweet chocolate and molasses, but there’s an almost green bitter hint riding around the top edge. Finish is more of a burnt bitter than the one noted above, with a creamy sweet touch underneath.

Really tasty stout. Nothing that hasn’t been done, but done absolutely well. Grabbed it almost on a whim in honour of the pounding that region had taken in recent weeks (fires and floods, etc), and glad I did from a tasty-beer-standpoint as well.

 

 

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Black, but transparent at the edges. Small khaki head.

Smell - Roasted malts. Coffee. Dark chocolate.

Taste - Deep roasted malts. A hint of sweetness. Bitter coffee malts. Much like its big brother, but nowhere near as intense.

Mouthfeel - Medium body. Mild bitterness.

Overall - Shouldn't have had this after the imperial version. This suffered. Well made but not that exciting.

What a delicious, creamy and toasty dark brew! Dark brown with chestnut edges in the Morte Subite globe. The head builds up nicely and subsides to a lacy cap. Mouthfeel is rich and sudsy with a plentiful but fine carbonation.

Very dark roasted malt is the main flavor. Some woody notes and a lot of grainy darkness. The mellow malty sweetness keeps this from slipping over the bitter and burnt edge, but there is plenty of charred barley. All very well balanced and hard to stop drinking. Bitter aftertaste is just right.

This was a nice surprise. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Bottleworks in Seattle.

 

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a thin tan head that died down, leaving a large collar around the edge of the glass and some lacing down the sides.
S: Light to moderate aromas of dark malts are present in the nose along with some hints of roast.
T: The taste has flavors of dark malts, except that the roasted flavors are a lot stronger and linger through the finish. There are light amounts of bitterness.
M: It feels a bit more than medium-bodied and quite smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer really exhibits a lot properties similar to a Russian Imperial Stout, except that it is lighter in body and has some pleasant smoothness from the oats.
