social capital is apparently a base sour beer, made like a berliner or something soured on the front end, but not specifically that, which they do with various fruits and barrel treatments from what i gather. when i visited, they had a cherry version aged on french oak. its a cool beer, deep pinkish red, somewhat substantial on the body, and with a clean but fairly intense acidity to it, past tangy to sour, but clean too. i get a lot of the wood in nose and taste, light vanilla and lumber in it, and some red wine too, slightly tannic, the cherries folded in beautifully. there is some sweetness from the fruit that i think runs over the mild grain base, but the sourness cuts it at the right time too. there is a lot of flavor in this, and i think the oak is a really important element for this, i couldnt imagine the beer without it. i bet this would be killer with a bunch of different fruits, peaches come to mind, but wine grapes would be nice too. great complexity for a kettle type sour, i was really impressed with the beers i had in here!
