On-draught @ Free House, Nelson, New Zealand. $9.50 NZD per 425ml draught pour.
Has a clean ester-free yeast profile. A note of tree sap mixed with a faint herbal almost tea-like but not astringent or bitter flavour is also present, which almost certainly must be the myrtle/manuka. Sweet and sappy, but not as herbal or sweet/fragrant as something like Australian lemon myrtle. 2-row malts give it its clean malt backbone.
Well carbonated. Refreshing; sure it's a bit sweet but it's well attenuated and it's slight herbal/tea-with-honey redolent flavour lends a blip of balancing bitterness. Finishes a bit coarse.
Unique in the way that many Lithuanian country ales are unique, which is to say that it's familiar and tastes like a beer but the herbal component gives it a very uncommon distinctive flavour.
Highly drinkable, and a beer I'd absolutely get again...they bill it as healthy/medicinal, which I doubt but will choose to believe to trick myself into drinking more of it. If this is what medicine tastes like, maybe I should move to New Zealand...

I got this beer many times, on tap and in bottle in different places. It is always a pleasure.
The manuka honey taste is herbal and sweet at the same time, there is a good bitter after taste. This beer is very well balanced, if you got any chance to try it, do it !

Mussel Inn Captain Cooker Manuka Beer on tap in the beer garden at the brewpub. 4% ABV
Deep amber with excellent clarity and a decent head.
Feel: Somewhat crisp, with medium carbonation and a dry finish. A tad thin.
Aroma: the manuka shows in the very floral aroma that also has a hint of pine. Spicy hops and manuka dominate the finish and lasting, very tasty, and mildly bitter aftertaste.
O: Distinct but not challenging. Recommended, particularly for its distinctive Manuka flavoring.

My parents went on holiday to New Zealand and brought this brew back with them. A large plastic bottle which contains approx. 1.3L according to the label. Has a 'packed on' date of 5th November 2010. The info on the label mentions that the beer was brewed with manuka leaves - similar to a recipe that was first created by captain Cook. (One small caveat: my Dad said he opened the bottle to release some pressure before bringing it over. I'm not sure what impact this will have had on the carbonation level or flavour).
Poured into a pint glass. A deep reddish copper colour; what little head there was subsided quickly. Low carbonation. Surprisingly little smell to this beer, it gives off a slightly sweet odour. Doesn't really have any of the malt or hops you would expect from a typical brew.
As with the smell, the taste is muted. Some malt but not much. The main flavour is a herb-like bitterness - somewhat dry and medicinal. It's reminiscent of herbal tea. No obvious hop characteristics. Mouthfeel is thin and watery. The taste doesn't linger, once you swallow a faint bitterness is all that remains.
Not a great drinking experience. Perhaps the travelling this bottle underwent had a negative effect on the contents. The beer lacked a balanced flavour, particularly malt, and the body was thin. The herby flavour was unusual, although not bad in itself. Worth trying for the novelty, but don't expect to be overwhelmed. Might be better if served in NZ!
