Purcahsed at the BSF bar, GBBF 2008, London. Coming in a 375ml green bottle, it's bottled in 01/08 and BB 31/03/09. served lightly chilled in a tulip-shpaed wine glass.
A: dark orangey-straw in colour, rather hazy (I chose to pour the residual yeast sediments into the glass), very still in carbonation, and topped with sparse bubbles.
S: peated malts abound, exactly "what it says on the tin"! The peat-smokiness comes rather mild actually, mixed with a light touch of peachy and orangey fruitiness as if from hops. Well-integrated is the aroma overall, albeit not great in terms of complexity.
T: lightly peary sour-sweet yeastiness comes with surprisingly mild peated flavour from the whisky malts; very clean in the aftertaste, then leading towards a soothing mineral+woody+herbal bitter finish. Very nice in the finishing touch.
M&D: the mouthfeel is just too flat; either the bottle is not properly sealed or something's gone wrong. That said, the texture doesn't seem to impede the overall performance too much. For, the smooth palate seems to echo the overall harmonious flavour profile. Compared with all other smoked beers (only a few) that I've had the chance to taste, this one comes only second in terms of the delicate performance from the smoked malts (Schlenkerla Rauch Lagerbier is still more subtle). Besides, the alc. is nowhere to be found!! Got to taste it again if I can find a slightly more lively bottle... next year at GBBF?
