On Tap at the Brewery – 11/16/2014
Full pint served in a snifter glass
A: The barley wine pours a rich and dark chestnut brown color with some reddish tones. More like an auburn I guess. Seems a bit thinner too as it lightens up towards the glass edge. Thin sheet off khaki film spread over top that settles out to a swirl. Virtually no stick rather just some alcohol legs running down the glass.
S: Smells plummy with some other assorted dark fruits, caramel toffee, and nougat. Finishes off with a nice spiced alcohol kick. Not all that hoppy to me and more of a deep kettled malt character here which is nice.
T: Tastes much the same with plum, fig and cherry tobacco over some sweet darkened caramels. Spiced nougat and molasses. Moderate to lower amount of actual bitterness to this but still lighter and controlled sweetness so as not to become cloy at all. Good wash of alcohol heat on the back end. Nice balance to it
M: Full bodied but perhaps dialed back a few notches. Not super thick nor syrupy which is good. Has a nice drying effort in the finish. Warming with alcohol especially on exhalation.
D: A decent little sipper. Not near the depth of some of the better B-wines out there but has nice balance to it and still makes for a nice quaff.

Nice subtle booziness. Notes are reminiscent of Sucaba with hints of vanilla and dark fruit.

On tap pour only available at the KRBC.
L- 1/2 inch light colored head, dark body almost porterish in this regard. nice lacing to the very end.
S - Definitely smell the bourbon, not over-powering, inviting, very similar to the ClassX BA stout, but less aggressive/pronounced.
T - The bourbon definitely at the beginning and lingering to the end. Very smooth with mild vanilla, caramel, oak flavors.
F - Very smooth throughout, refined on the palate with zero harsh bite.
This was a delicious first effort from KRBC. Definite similarities to the BA stout that is an occasional offering and up there with the best BA Barleywines that I have had. maybe not as refined as Sucaba or BCBBW, but an admirable first effort and likely to improve with future iterations. Well done KRBC!
