On tap @ the Toronado (San Diego, CA) on 11/11/09. Served in a pint glass.
Pours a fairly clear coppery amber, with a modest covering of foamy brite-white head. Retention and lacing keep that foamy look, mostly the whole way through the glass. The aroma sits heavy in the nose, with a deep sweetness to it from tropical fruits, caramel, and bread. This is punctuated by some sharp pangs of piney resins and some lesser spice.
The taste has a big thick tang to it, from the citrus and toasted caramel. A strong resinous bite smothers the palate with sticky resins and spice. The finish is sticky at first and then gets more drying. The mouthfeel is fuller bodied, with a good bit of alcohol beef to it and a big prickly creaminess that keeps things moving in the right direction.
This was decent. No shortage of hops but the heavy sweetness and feel helped drag this down some. A bit of a letdown, especially after having had their regular IPA from here.
