Poured from a 500ml bottle into a dimpled pint mug.
Pours a dark brown/black colour with a slightly off-white head.
Smells dark, malty and rich.
Taste reflects the smell with the added disappointment of a very watery taste and feel. This weakens the impact of the dark and lovely malty flavours that could be there, and with the addition of a sharp yeasty taste, brings down the quality of the beer to be distinctly average tasting.
Overall an okay beer but definitely one with quite a few weak points. Wouldn't try this one again.

Purchased at the UTOBEER in the Borough Market, S. London. Bottle-conditioned, it comes in a short-neck, 355ml brown bottle, looking rather unconventional for a British bottled beer. BB APR 2006, consumed on 20 June 2006, served cool in a pint jug.
A: pours a pitch black hue, the hissing and fast-effervescent beige beer head settles down quite fast to a thin carpet on the top, where quite lively fizzy action is detected.
S: a deeply chocolatey note of chocolate malts prevails, with a nice kick of roasty edge of black malts at the back and more chocolatey elements with touches of vanilla, faint licorice, and balanced with a lighter flow of pale maltiness and an aromatic fruitiness (esp. after a swirl), like sticky preserved plums and flower. Balanced, settled aroma, with a good gravity in the centre.
T: quite typical of an English porter or sweet stout: a fluffy-textured dark maltiness expands on the palate, bringing aboard hints of vanilla, dark milk chocolates, an aromatic tinge of roast nuts... as it gradually fades out, an aromatic malty aftertone and a light, winey fruitiness sustain deep down the palate; somehow a lease of treacles seems to have its own idea, semi-detaching from the fore-taste of mixed maltiness and stays at the very tail of the palate. Alas, very little roastiness and bitterness is discerned in the aftertaste, a bit of pity.
M&D: overall, medium-bodied and rather "fluffy" on the mouthfeel, due to the healthy carbonation I presume. This is a reasonably fruity and refreshingly malty porter or sweet stout to quaff, quite enjoyable; that said, my palate craves for more bitterness or bitter-sweetness to help strike a balance and elevate it to a higher level~~
