A custom brew for the Hudsons Tap House chain, to commemorate, I assume, Henry Hudson's role in the exploration of what was to become our home and native land...
This beer appears a hazy orange/candy red hue, with one finger of thin creamy pink head, which settles fairly quickly, leaving a few random eruptions of lace around the glass. It smells of faint sweet bready malt, and soapy floral hops. The taste is quite reminiscent of those gritty, powdery Sweet Hearts candies, on top of a very mild plain pale malt, and equally shy earthy hops. The carbonation is low, the body medium weight, and generally smooth. It finishes off-dry, the chalky, powdery sweet candy still the most perceivable trait.
While this limited offering sure looks the part for Canada Day celebrations, I'm not exactly waving the flag over it. Not that hard to put back, but the candy flavour is distracting after too short a while. Given this, and the coloration of the head, one has to conclude that some kind of colour additive was employed. If it wasn't on special for 4 bucks a pint (and it wasn't so sunny on the patio), I probably wouldn't have had another.
