A jump from one of our seasonal favorites, this imperial black pumpkin ale pours dark and is jacked with the taste of toasted oak and rye. Pumpkin and spice aromas play with flickers of barrel-aged character kindling tight bitterness and a bold caramel malt finish.

750 bottle, thanks bro- Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is oak, bourbon, sweet, pumpkin, tart (2015 aged). Taste is soured, pumpkin, oak, bourbon, fruit forward, but not too sweet. Not bad. Infected...

f'ing nasty. I'm shocked to see this rated so high. Overly boozy and coarse. The mix of roast, hoppy, and pumpkin is straight butt.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 9/17/2015. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big pumpkin, chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, toffee, toasted oak, spicy rye, dark/brown bread, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, clove, light bourbon/molasses, and oak/roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, pumpkin/spices, and bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of huge pumpkin, chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, toffee, toasted oak, spicy rye, dark/brown bread, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, clove, light bourbon/molasses, and oak/roast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal/roast bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of pumpkin, chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, toffee, toasted oak, spicy rye, dark/brown bread, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, clove, bourbon, oak/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, pumpkin/spices, and bourbon barrel flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light dryness from bitter/spiciness, lightly increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky, and lightly slick/sticky/chalky/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is awesome. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish; with zero barrel booziness. Overall this is a fantastic barrel aged black pumpkin ale! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, pumpkin/spices, and bourbon barrel flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the big ABV. Not sure how it tasted fresh; but after over a year of age, the balance and integration of flavors is amazing. A lot of great oak presence, but not a whole lot of bourbon; so likely aged in multiple use barrels. A highly enjoyable offering.

Reviewed from long-standing notes. Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a Firestone Walker snifter.

A: Very dark brown and opaque, with a big fluffy tan head that lasts pretty well. Significant visible carbonation during the pour, but it settles down.

S: Pumpkin pie spices and pumpkin innards, bourbon, oak and roasted malts.

T: Roasted malts and pumpkin pie spices. Malts that I would call lightly toasted bready seem to add a "crust" aspect as well. Then some bourbon, oak, vanilla and woody tannins. Some chocolate malts and cacao show up as it warms a bit. Hang is some more bourbon with some residual malt sweetness at the end.

M: Medium body, low carbonation sensation. Alcohol presence is restrained for a barrel-aged beer.

O: A pretty enjoyable pumpkin beer for me. Not a style that's a favorite of mine, and nothing I'd actively seek out a repeat performance of, but it was good.

A: The beer is black when viewed from afar—when held up a light the bottom of the glass is clear but dark red in color and has no visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high tan head that died down, leaving some lacing on the surface and a thin collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of pumpkin spices are present in the nose along with notes of sweet malts.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste has flavors of pumpkins and pumpkin spices along with sweet notes of caramel malts and hints of bourbon. Among the pumpkin spices, nutmeg and ginger seem to stand out in particular.
M: It feels a bit more than medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I thought that this beer would have more in the way of bourbon in the smell and taste, but it's not bad if you like pumpkin beers. You really need to let it warm up to let the bourbon develop a little. It does a very good job at hiding all of its alcohol.

Note; Bottled on 9/17/15

Bottled 9/17/15, marked down to 7 dollars. My benefit.

Brown, almost reddish when pouring but dark, with an off white thick creamy head.

Aroma: strong spices, cinnamon, nutmeg, faint pumpkin, slightest amount of bourbon/oak but its there.

Taste: medium mouthfeel, light carbonation, dry cinnamon, caramel, roasted, pecans, a bit of oak, faint bourbon, slight bitter finish.

Good lacing.

Black in color and impenetrable to light. There's a half inch of tightly knit beige foam resting on top. Aromas are comprised of pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and sweet bourbon. I taste a complex blend of dark malt, nutmeg, clove, sweet bourbon, and bitter piney hops show up at the back of the palate. The mouth is moderately carbonated and a touch oily.

Appearance: After the bubble show concludes we are left with a beige three fingered head that squats atop the coffee colored liquid; impressive retention and gobs of lacing hang around

Smell: Pumpkin pie spices; praline, toasted pecans and oak

Taste: Praline, burnt caramel and toasted pecans, up front, with the pumpkin pie spices building through the middle; slightly burnt and oaky in the finish with Bourbon flashing in the aftertaste

Mouthfeel Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation; slight warmth in the gullet

Overall: Not generally being a fan of pumpkin beers, I was quite surprised here; this one works really well
