Purchased at the Tesco supermarket, coming in a slim, 500ml brown bottle, filtered and pasteurised. BB 28/11/2008, served cool in a straight imperial pint glass.
A: dark golden, a white fluffy head with good retention, on top of sporadic fizziness.
S: the rich aroma of Goldings hops with a sweet citric edge prevails, on top of syrupy malts, flowery hints and a metallic touch, and light sulphur... quite dense but straight forward.
T: quite sharply spritzy upfront, the taste is bitter-sweet citric from the start... the dryish bitter palate manifests itself quickly, mixed with biscuits and a richly herbal, almost licorice-like, hoppiness at the back. Decent aftertaste, bitter and chewy, where a subtle floral touch and lotus-seed-like sweetness also linger.
M&D: it could've been much nicer if the carbonation is not this lively; the flavour profile gives a strong hint that hops are used in abundance in this beer, which is then well matured for malts to settle, hence a decent balance overall. All in all, not bad, but the fizzy mouthfeel is almost off-putting for my palate.
