Bottle. Dark chestnut. Clear with a thin cream coloured head.
Smells of caramel with stewed autumn and summer berries.
The caramel turns to a more bitter treacle like flavour.
Medium carbonation and body.
Heading towards a well hopped porter.

L- Ultra dark ruby-red, that like many stouts superficially appears black. 5mm quite dark tan small-bubble head that's holding up.
S- Oh, it's a bit of a 'fruit crush'.
T- Brief fruit then right into very deep slightly smokey roasted notes. The citrus on the front is akin to... mild grapefruit? Mercifully the genuine trad black-beer aspect quickly crush them (geddit?) into obscurity.
F- It's pungent stuff, I wouldn't bank on registering much from a more subtle offering after drinking this. It has a decent balance on it though and I could imagine fans having a few of these in a night.
O- I hadn't realised this new beer I spotted was 'hipsterised' (oh the horror!) until I got it home. But it's nowhere the OTT I feared it might be. I suspect that this will find a more admiring market amongst a younger demographic.
Bought from Waitrose. 500ml bottle £2.20 BB: stamped on neck of bottle = 15/09/2023.
p.s. From the brewery website, a description apparently pitched at children, and what on earth are 'fierce malts'?:
'Expect the unexpected. The fierce bite of roasted malt meets the gnarly, piney bitterness of new world hops to offer a balanced, complex and refreshing Black IPA with bags of flavour.
Black malt, chocolate malt and flaked oats add roasted and chocolate notes and give the beer an intense dark appearance. Masses of Cascade, Columbus, Chinook and Citra hops create woody pine, biting citrus and hints of bright tropical flavours.
Colour - Black
Aroma - Pine, grapefruit and roasted malt.
Taste - A roasty background leads to a pummelling of piney, citrusy hops. [I thought only masochists paid to be pummelled?]
Food Matches - Amazing alongside barbecued burnt ends and creamy slaw. [What are 'burnt ends'? Sounds horrible!]
Ingredients - Water, Yeast, Malted Barley, Oats, Hops.
