A: Black and cappuccino colored head that fizzles quickly.

S: Loaded with sweet chocolate and malt. Some sprinkle of espresso grounds.

M: Med to full body. Has a crisp middle. A little cloying with very dry finish.

T: Matches nose for most part. Essence of barley. Mostly chocolate. Has a fruity sweetness to it almost like cherry. Has elements that make it more of a brown ale.

Served on tap at the brewery. The initial appearence is quite pleasing. Very dark, black brew capped by a nice-tan toned cap. Aromas of smoked oak, cocoa, toasted malts, charcoal are apparent. Taste, though, I must say is not outstanding. Light toasted flavors of malt, no sweetness really to speak of. Mouthfeel is on the light spectrum, rather dry finish. This beer goes down easily, but not highly enjoyable.

Hyde Park Brewing Company's version of Guinness. The appearance is identical in blackness, but with a lighter white head that does not last as long as a Guinness. OK amount of lacing on the glass. The smell was good, hints of chocolate & coffee. But the taste was just not as smooth as a guinness. Frankly, it tasted a *little* flat/dirty -- maybe it was a bad tap. I was really looking forward to trying this one, but it didn't hold up well to a Guinness or Murphy's.

Appearance: black in color with a 1" light tan colored head. The head slowly falls to a thick surface foam. Some nice lacing develops.

Smell: light roasted malts are mildly detectable.

Taste: roasted malt, hint of chocolates and coffee, and some licorice is noticeable near the finish. Mildly dry and some soft bitterness rounds it out.

Mouthfeel: lightly crisp at the start, smooth and mildly dry at the finish. Medium bodied. Roasted tones linger briefly in the aftertaste.

Drinkability: extremely easy drinking as several of these can be quaffed in a single session. Nice solid beer here.
