500ml flip top bottle, filled directly from the 55 gal stainless drum out back. Brewed March 2007, hand-bottled May 2010. The brewer repeatedly referred to this beer as his "dark" brewed in the Lambic style.
Pours completely flat as was bottled, almost opaque dark brown with crimson edging. Zero lacing.
Aromatics are loaded with earthy balsamic, roasted malt, sour cherries, and phenolic funk. Shades of smoke, sherry, chocolate and soured fruit follow through.
Medium bodied with a slick, waxy mouthfeel. Quite coating and lingering in nature.
Vinegar-soaked fruit, spoiled Oreo shells, lemon oil and char lead off the palate. Extremley sour and puckering, with plenty of roasted malt and rotted fruit. The base beer could almost be a Porter, if it was a Porter blended with Balsamic and cherries.
Finishes with a persistant sourness, balsamic-soaked cherries, and burnt malt.
What a challenging beer. Being flat out of the bottle I will have no problem saving some for tomorrow night.
