Nice ba beer, good barrel flavor, partial to the balcones barrel beer

luce perfecta se sierve muy bien, muy buena espuma y retención de espuma, color rojizo oscuro muy bonito, tiene un aroma increible notas muy dulces, maltas caramelo dominantes, los lúpulos no aparecen en el aroma, pero si en el balance sobre todo al final del trago, es una cerveza muy respetable, definitivamente la volvería a beber en todas las ocasiones que la encuentre.

Got in a BIF from Ozzylizard. 24 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled in 2022, batch 1. Pours very dark ruby red/brown color with a small fairly dense off white head with solid retention, that reduces to a thin spotty lace cap. Light lacing and streaming carbonation on the glass. Aromas of big caramel, toffee, brown sugar, raisin, fig, date, brown bread/crust, toast; light peppercorn, herbal, roast. Some booze. Taste follows through with caramel, toffee, brown sugar, raisin, plum, fig, date, apple, brown bread/crust, bourbon, oak, toast; light peppercorn, pine, herbal, grass, roast. Light-medium herbal/pine bitterness and oak tannin spiciness on the finish. A bit of tartness/tang from yeast. Medium-plus carbonation and medium body; balanced bready/grainy malt, sticky malt, and barrel tannins in the mouthfeel. Lingering bitter/sticky/tannin dryness with no astringency. A bit too fruity, and thin for the style on mouthfeel, but there is plenty of barrel and solid malt complexity. Boozy/warming 12% finish. Very good beer.

 

Look: dark brown with a thin off-white / mocca head

Aroma: roasted malts, grapefruit, whiskey/bourbon.

Flavor: The flavor is brown sugar, some roasted malts, slightly tart, grapefruit, whiskey/bourbon.

Body/Overall: It's ok, but it has a quickly dying head, no lacing, a bit thin of a body, it's softly carbonated.

Truly an incredible brew from Shiner, worth every penny.

Now this one came in a bomber and cost a bit more than usual. And since Shiner is not a brewery to have a lot of expensive beers, I figured they worked a bit harder on this one.

Overall I liked it. Malts dominated, as would be expected, along with a notable sweetness. Very enjoyable.

Shiner Brewers Pride Barrel-Aged Doppelbock from Spoetzl Brewery. (Review 3007) 22 oz bottle with twist-off cap on room temperature shelf from Spec’s #69, Schertz, TX, on 31/10/22. $21.34 (Including tax) = $ 0.97/oz. Stored at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 08/01/23. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
On rear label “2022 Release #1”. Served at 53.7 degrees in a hand washed and dried Kitzinger half liter dimpled mug. The final temperature was 57.7 degrees.
Appearance – 3.5
First pour – Medium Amber (SRM 12), clear.
Body – Amber Brown (SRM 18), opaque. Under direct light, same. When rear-lite, ruby and hazy.
Head – Average (Maximum four cm, aggressive center pour), wheat, high density and fizzy, quickly diminishing to a 0.2 cm bubble ring and no cap.
Lacing – None.
Aroma – 3 – Little aroma of roasted malt, no hops, no yeast, no alcohol, no barrel.
Flavor – 3.25 – Begins slightly sweet and the flavor follows the nose – weak roasted malt, no hops, no yeast, no barrel. No ethanol (12 % ABV as marked on labels) flavor, but some booze is present on the exhale. Mild gastric warming occurs. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 3.75 – Medium, nudges against the edge of syrupy, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.5 Not a particularly good doppelbock but not spectacularly bad either. Kudos to Spoetzl for the attempt! Maybe next try a little less ethanol and a little more barrel and malt flavor.

Bomber

Appearance: Brown glass struggles to hold a thin collar of white bubbles. Back light gives a soft (hazed) ruby glow.

Aroma: Heavy grape skin tannin, white grape skin? Some decoction malt sweetness of a dopplebock.

Taste: Almost vinegar barrel sour overwhelms the base beer. Some of the sweet malt comes through with a bruised purple grape juice, and a little barrel complexity, but the sour note is overwhelming.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, no carbonation, oily texture, slight warmth.

Overall: I'm a big Shiner fan boy, and I like that they swung for the fences with one of if not their highest abv beers. This, didn't go well. I won't be getting any more of these, but I'll be sure to try the next Brewer's Pride project.

 

Deep reddish brown with a modest off-white head. Smells of stone fruit and brandy. Very malty and alcohol forward, which I don't mind at all, with stone fruit and brandy notes. Medium bodied, moderately carbonated.

Appearance – The beer pours a dark brown color with almost no head. The small amount of foam that is present fades very fast leaving almost no lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is quite strong of a brown sugar and caramel smell mixed with a roasted brown bread and dark fruit aromas of raisin, fig, plum, and prune. Along with these smells comes a rather decent showing of a bourbon aroma, which is accompanied by oak, leather, and some smoke.
Taste – The taste begins with a mix of sweet and malty, with the sweet being heaviest of a brown sugar and molasses flavor while the malt is of a brown bread and toasted caramel malt like taste. There is also the dark fruits that were present in the nose, with raisin, fig, and prune all being there, along with a bit of grape. As the taste advances the fruit fades a touch, but is replaced by more brown sugar and some cola flavors. There also is an emergence of a boozy bourbon flavor, that brings some heat to the taste. Toward the end some cherry and a light woodiness join in, and with the rest of the flavors leave a rather sweet and somewhat thick and warming taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew medium in thickness and chewiness for the style and abv. with a carbonation level that is lower. For the style, I would have liked to see a bit more thickness, but overall, the feel was appropriate and made of a decent sipping brew.
Overall – An alright doppelbock, with a nice sweeter taste and a decent drinkability but not worth the price tag of around $20.
