Sampled at le Saint-Bock, the new Beer bar/Brewpub in town.

Appearance: Opaque and pitch black (what were you expecting?), thin but resilliant off-grey head.

Smell: A touch of ash, but not enough to revolt me it seems, some raspberry-like fruityness, black licorice/anis and maybe a bit of soya. Lose the ash and this is a winner.

Taste: Anis comes through at first with the smooth carbonation, some roasted, chocolate notes and lightly hoppy to finish off, but lacked a bit of body and again had some ash in there.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with an average off-white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry roasted malt with some very light coffee notes. Taste is also dominated by some medium roasted malt notes with some light coffee and a medium bitter finish. Body is a bit thin for the style with some good carbonation. I thought it was well balance dry stout maybe slightly lacking in character.

A: Black. Very dark. No head, even though I tried everything to get one! The thin film is beige or if you prefer pale brown. This thin film leaves nice stuff on the glass 'tho.
S: Coffee with chocolate. Typical of dry stout.
T: On the taste, it is better. However it remains chocolate and coffee. The bitterness is one that is typical of grains of coffee.
M: A bit thin in the mouth and probably too much carbonation for this type of beer.
D: Easy to drink but this is more of a normal beer than a sipper... Session...

Taste with a Belgium dark chocolate... the bitterness disappear and it is more chocolaty! The beer is smoother too.

341 ml brown bottle.

A- Acceptable head of small bubbles, moka coloured with an orange tinge. Very dark black. As I poured it,the light going throuhg the stream of beer showed it to be a deep dark brown. Head settles rather quickly but leaves a ring of bubbles.

S- Roasted chocolate and soy sauce covered almonds. Sadly, this is one of the best aspects of this beer as I happen to like soy sauce flavoured almonds (though I'm not sure this is what a brewer should go for).

T- Burnt toast and charred potato behind a watery front. Very little malt flavour. Lingering neutral bitter flavour that isn't very strong. The bitterness is not at a bad level actually but it lacks any interesting character. The taste is unpleasant overall.

MF- Unacceptably thin and watery. Leaves a bit of a dry pasty feeling. Only good point is that it is smooth.

D- This beer just completely misses the mark. If you can't stomack dark beer this won't change your mind. Even if you like stouts, I doubt you will like this. I happen to love a good stout. I barely made it through this one. The worst of its kind I've had yet.

341 bottle coming from a tasting pack with 5 other beers.

A : Black with dark brown head. It does not stays long enough though and leaves only a trail on top.

S : Chocolate, coffee

T : The taste is not strong at all, kinda sweet also

M : Medium bodied, not much carbonation

D : I would have no problems drinking another one but it is not the best one around.

341 mL brown bottle, undated.

Pours an inky black with a tan head that disappears quickly.

Intense smokey aroma with some burnt toast notes.

Charcoal and smoke flavours dominate. Faint sweetness, hints of wood and dark chocolate. Finishes bitter and fairly astringent. Body is average with fairly high carbonation.

Unbalanced with too much emphasis on the burnt flavours.

A stout offering from one of the area's newer brewers. Could be interesting.

Standard stout look. Deep tar with few rays permeating the opal liquid. A sand coloured head sits proudly atop the beer and has enough staying power to be contemplated for a while. Some lacing but nothing out of the ordinary.

Aromas: A powerful and lasting dose of peat smoke slaps you in the face as you plunge your nose into the glass. I happen to be a fan of Islay malts and find this aroma reminescent of Ardbeg and Bowmore single malts. Unfortunately not much manages to break through this front. Maybe a bit of roastiness and some fruit? Too much peat.

As far as flavours are concerned, they don't step up to the plate as does the smoke smell. Very weak, almost watery. Not what I was expecting for a stout even an ordinary english stout. Mild roasted notes, some burnt bitterness and a hint of resiney hops dressed with timid carbonation. Mouthfeel is dry and wispy, no real surprise.

This is certainly drinkable, but I don't see why I would drink much more than one of these as there really is no interest within for me.

Pitch black with a massive head I can stand on. Drops moderately slowly to rocky, patchy foam. Nose is burnt grain, cigarette butts and coffee grounds. Seems to have the requisite aromas, but it all smells stale and harsh. Dry, again with lots of toastiness. Burnt rather than toasted though and with a light bitterness in the back. Astringent and moderately sized body and sharp carbonation. Overall, it's an unflattering combination of harshness that makes this a little difficult to drink.
