A one finger head but lots of lacing left all down the glass. Brownish/black in appearance.

Smells of molasses, caramel. Great full and smooth mouthfeel.

The taste was very sweet with roasted notes, coffee, chocolate milk, slight maltiness and a slight dry bitter finish.

On the positive side the alcohol was hidden but unfortunately it was too sweet to try more than once (a moot point since it's discontinued)

Thanks to papat444 for this bottle. Served in a Surly pint glass.

A - Pours with a half-finger of yellow-tan foam that settles to a partial cap and thicker collar. Reddish brown body with some faint transparency, and bubbles adhering to the sides of the glass. Looks a little wussy for an "Imperial" Porter, but otherwise is pretty solid.

S - Big semisweet chocolate, dark fruits, burnt malts, and faint char and smoke. There's a lactic quality that makes me think milk stout, but I have no idea if lactose is actually used in this beer. Quite potent, and pleasant albeit perhaps a touch too sweet. As it warms up it becomes faintly medicinal.

T - Taste is milk chocolate, faint Whoppers (malted milk balls), dark fruits, a hint of sweet fruity oxidation, and some molasses as well. A touch cloying after a while, but not bad. A hint of roast and char bitterness that lingers into the aftertaste.

M - Carbonation is too high, even for a porter - it burns my upper lip. Otherwise it's a fairly chewy medium body that leaves behind lingering stickiness and a touch of alcohol warmth.

D - Too sweet and highly carbonted for mass quantities - 12oz was sufficient. Not a bad beer by any stretch though. Would be interested in trying it fresh, if it weren't retired.

Beer pours black without any head which is sad. It would benefit from the formation of a good head here. The smell is chocolate with light notes of smoke. On the taste, I get alcohol first and some coffee grains. The beer feels warm due to the alcohol level. My bottle says it is 8%ABV. I guess the recipe has change which is not surprising from this brewer. The mouthfeel is thin bodied. Overall this is not a bad beer, would go at it again but not often.

Bottle: Poured a deep black color porter with a rather large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of lightly roasted malt with some sweet black chocolate. Taste was also dominated by some black chocolate with light roasted notes. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Overall I thought this was good but lacking character to be on my list of regular.

8.7% on this label.

A: Brownish-black with a tan head, not much retention but it leaves a little leg/lace.

S: Big alcohol nose, chocolate covered strawberries, grainy biscuit & hint of sour cherries.

T: Chocolate, nut, caramelized raisins, dates, brown sugar, dark toffee, good bitterness, warming alcohol, slightly sour graininess.

M: Well attenuated moderate body actually seems a little thin; slightly chalky, with a drying alcohol finish.

D: Decent for the style.

Viggo shared this one with me. thanks eric!

12oz bottle. sampled feb 7/09.

pours deep brown and not quite opaque. the small very fine light brown head quickly drops to a ring around the glass and leaves spotty lace as it falls.

aroma is good. alcohol. milk chocolate. white bread and cracker. bit of biscuit. touch of lactic sourness, lending to the milky perception. earthy. touch of smoke too, but fairly faint. hint of fruity character.

taste is good. just over medium bitterness level. warming alcohol, a little more than i'd expect from 7%. bittersweet and milk chocolate. toasted whole wheat bread. cracker. touch of biscuit. bit of coffee. hazelnut and a bit of almond. light caramel sweetness.

mouthfeel is good. medium-large body. just under medium carbonation level.

drinkability is good. pretty well balanced. tasty and nice. i liked this one, with the warming alcohol the only real flaw.

12 oz bottle picked up in Montreal.

Pours a cloudy dark brownish orange, some red in the edges, lots of chunks floating around, medium big bubbled tan head forms, settles down to a thin ring around the glass, lots of lacing sticks to the glass, looks alright. Smell is alright, milk chocolate, caramel, cola, brown sugar and molasses, dark fruit, strawberries and cherries, quite sweet, more chocolate, quite nice. Taste is bland, some light chocolate and roast, fruity, very dry and spicy in the middle, crackery, brown sugar, vanilla, slightly milky, bitterness is offputting. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with medium carbonation, too much bitterness and pretty bland, but better than expected.

A very drinkable porter, because it was a baltic that wasn't. Jet black with initial white head. Easy drinking creamy mouthfeel. Malty with only a hint of sourness. Carmel, Chocolate malts,a bit of roast maybe even some oatmeal. Soda and malt aroma.
