From AMB's Classique mixed 12-pack. True to its name, the Noire pours with an opaque black body topped by a good cover of mocha-coloured head. Retention could be improved; didn't take to long to fade to a collar. Some lacing.
Fairly nice nose presenting chocolate, malted milk, lots of minerals, whole wheat bread and earthy hops in good balance.
Flavourful and well-balanced with lots of roasted malt up front, just enough soily hops and dark caramel. Bits of minerals, dark chocolate and old coffee grounds. Cheap-tasting alcohol makes a subtle appearance on the finish but this is still a pretty solid stout.
The label advertises it's light body as a positive but it ends up being a little too light for my liking. Carbonation is almost overdone but not too bad.
Given the overall mediocre quality of the mixed 12-pack, this quite-decent stout is by far the standout. I'm not sure exactly what a "classic black" beer is supposed to be (porter? stout? schwarzbier?) but I would definitely call this one an English stout. I would potentially drink this again, especially if I found it somewhere on tap. Worth checking out if English stout is really your thing.

341ml bottle poured into beer-clean snifter.
A- Opaque black. Brown highlights. Cappucino coloured head did not last very long and I am now left with some freaky, groovy looking surface swirls and a thick ring around the glass. Some lacing I guess, not much to say about that.
S- Chocolate wafer with a dark chocolate backbone. Hot alcohol if you sniff hard enough. Very nice. Not that much of the metallic/mineral I was expecting.
T- Bitter right up front and all through out. A strong toasty/roasted bitterness. Aerating the after-taste reveals itself very similar to coffee. Some green in the creeps up in the after-taste as well.
M- Smooth, full body and slightly prickly carbonation together making this an interesting mouthfeel. Foamy and considerably dry yet pretty far from crisp.
D- Good. Smooth, tasty and refreshing without being watery or seltzery. I'd drink a few of these..
Definitely a better product than I was expecting. Worth trying if you see it in stores.
