A Dark and Stormy night is often a parodied phrase, but in Whistler it can only mean two things; …the snow is coming and enjoying beers by the fire. This unique ale brewed with ginger is the perfect excuse to bundle up and watch the storm roll by.

650ml bottle - why do I always want to say the phrase 'dark and stormy' with an Australian accent? Silly brain.

This beer pours a clear, very dark orange-tinted brown colour, with three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly tan head, which leaves some frozen waterfall lace around the glass as it slowly sinks away.

It smells of earthy ginger root, lightly roasted bready and doughy caramel malt, bittersweet chocolate, cola syrup, and some tame leafy, grassy, and floral green hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, a bit of free-agent ashiness, rather ethereal fresh ginger notes, more generic cola sweetness, faint cocoa powder, and even more timid leafy, weedy, and dead floral hoppiness.

The carbonation is quite understated in its plebeian frothiness, the body a so-so medium weight (and weirdly watery), with a decent smoothness once the ginger quickly evaporates. It finishes off-dry, the caramel cola character plodding along, looking for its long lost cohorts.

Overall, this one has an enticing aroma, but a flavour that cannot match - it's ok, I guess, and easy enough to put back, and obviously not too spicy from the guest ginger. Not to mention the everyday standard 5% ABV - if there's a fireside on a dark and stormy night, you can bet yer bupkis that I'll be wanting a bit more strength in my brew.

The nose is great - lots of ginger and spice. The taste is very ginger forward but it dies almost immediately. In the end the beer is reminiscent of water with some ginger flavour.
