My first cask ale sampling ever occurred at Embers Grill in Alpharetta. The beer was served in a 20 oz. Imperial Pint glass, and looked reddish brown in color with a translucent body. As anticipated the head was small and didnt last very long. When sniffed, this malty brew displayed an aroma with notes of chocolate, toffee, floral hops, and some orange peel. The taste was sweet with some sour citric complexity. The temperature out off the cask was nicely warm, which allowed the flavors of chocolate, toffee, raisins, and red apples to come across full and rich. Towards the middle of each sip, the hops balanced out the malt, and at the end of the sip dried up the mouth. Lusciously soft and soothing on the tongue, this beer felt quite full bodied and creamy, a lot of which was undoubted resulting from the traditional dispensing method used. The alcohol never felt as high as it was until I finished two pints. This beer felt quite similar to a Belgian Dubbel to me, and was quite easy to gulp down making my first trip to Embers a memorable one. Hope they feature more varied styles on cask soon.
