On-tap at the brewery:

Pours amber with a head that dissipates, leaving some lacing.

The smell is of herbal hops with a "red" malty character.

The taste of sweet malt and bitter hops weave in and out, making it seem "balanced", but they don't really blend together as well as they should. Hops add more bitterness than actual flavor.

Well, the hops and the malt are both there, and the malt has the general characteristics of a "red". It is a hop-leaning red. It's decent, even pretty good - but things didn't come together or as flavorful as they could be. Still, it was pleasant enough to drink.

64 oz growler poured into a Sprecher nonic. Growler filled at the brewery yesterday. At this moment it's a on-tap beer only.

Thanks to my cousin Dan for bringing this over!

A - From the growler this pours a haze-free, clear, lightly bronzed amber red color. The foam reaches about a finger and is retained fairly well leaving a cream-colored ring, a thin film, and patchy lacing.

S - Grassy, earthy notes abound from the hops used. A touch of floral hints too. Laid-back malt presence that holds it's own but isn't too prominent. Toasty amber aroma with a light caramelized hint to it. Nutty undertones too.

T - It's well-balanced right off the bat. A strong grassy, earthy hop flavor is met by a strong amber, toasty malt balance that results in a crisp and lightly dry flavor.

M - Crisp and refreshing for a red. Medium-light in body and smooth but well-carbonated. Slightly dry with a mild bitterness.

D - Not really a match for Special Amber but it's pretty good. Something I could do half a growler of no problem. Pretty easy drinking and nicely flavored but doesn't stand out in a style saturated by mediocrity.
