this is lovely stuff, the more striking of the two beers i had while we were in. they start with their knot tree porter as a base, which i have not had before but now want to, and then spike it with coffee from evans bros, a legit local roaster, and these beans are no doubt heady. not sure how it was infused, but its low acid to me so likely cold. its also quite intense, so maybe some direct bean to beer contact rather than a cold brew or something blended in, really robust but also very smooth, i think the base beer is well suited to this, it can certainly handle all the coffee, and i was impressed with this overall. coal black pour here, short but persistent tan her, creamy lace hanging around. the nose is coffee before beer to me, deeply roasty but not exceedingly bitter or acrid in any way, not charred, dark cocoa and light licorice character to it, very light on the middle malts this is all dark to me, just a little something to the ferment is all, very cohesive, wintery, and cozy to me. the flavor is the same, big roasty java all the way through it, a dry espresso richness, minerals, light breadiness in the middle and from the yeast, cocoa nib earthiness and maybe the faintest raisin fruitiness to the coffee as well. the bitterness of the coffee makes this drink even drier than it already is, so its pretty easy down for a beer this dark and bold. good carbonation but a mellow smooth pace overall, palate coating but not lingering too long, i love the coffee in this, and it warms up well, really more middle chocolate nuance, a hint of black tea to it too, fig, just delicious. great rainy day sipper and one of my favorites from these guys to date.
