Review: 33cl stubby bottle of Jessenhofke's Maya, a Belgian Ale: 6% ABV
MAYA spelled out in big lettering on the bottle. A very interesting beer that uses the starchy water of a local seitan factory in Maya, hence the name. Seitan, of course, is a meat substitute, and is a chewy protein-rich food made from wheat gluten.
Looks good on pour, with a nice hazy white head, and a nice golden colour, looks very good in fact.
Some small carbonation going on. By the end of all that it stands tall looking fantastic in the glass.
Frothy white head maintains very well.
Smell was pretty light for me, but I did get a whiff of the malts.
Creamy mouthfuls on the initial taste, nice, also getting some light tasting fruits.
Hops come into play soon after. Light and manageable. Balanced with the malts.
The alcohol is well hidden, making this a very light beer and easy to drink.
Also getting some caramel in the background.
A regular Belgian blonde that is all organic

Shop: De Bierkoning, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Glass: La Chouffe Tulip
Name on Label: Maya
Image on Label: Mayan woman with some hops and red sun in the background
ABV: 6%
Ingredients according to label: water, barley malt, starch from Maya seitan, unrefined cane sugar, herbs, yeast.
Expiry date: 18NOV11 (almost one year expired but bought it just few weeks ago. Didn't expect this from the Bierkoning)
LOT: n/a
murky orange, coarse bubbled head
no carbonation visible
smells of booze, hops and some floral notes
nice balance of sweet and bitter, but I do not taste the added seitan or the herbs.
enough carbonation to be refreshing.
a typical blonde with nothing to write home about except that it still tastes quite well after it is expired for almost a year and that it contains almost only organic ingredients.

Did the other reviewers drink the same beer as I did five minutes ago?
This is really a good beer! And I don't recognize anything of the ones who criticized it so much. Maybe this is the best (light) blond I know!
L: gold; little trouble; nice lasting top;
S: vanilla, floral and herbal notes, interesting;
T: round, fresh, a tiny citrus, fora and herbs;
M: very good! I lacks the bready stuff of other blonds, which I usually don´t like, a very tiny bitterishness, light alcohol is great, very drinkable
O: Jesserhofke calls this a party beer. And that´s very true. Well done!

330ml bottle. Snifter glass. Enjoyed on jun´12. Golden color, chill haze appearance. Brief, white in color, crown. A single ring remains on top. Aromas as expected from a Belgian: crystal malt, candies, lemon, sugar, yeast & spices. Tangerine notes. Warming, sugary & spiced flavor at first sip. Slightly orangish bitter. Medium body, moderate carbonation. Lasting fruity finish.

19th May 2012: 0.75 litre cork and caged bottle, well in date, poured into three glasses.
Lager looking brew, clear and crisp with a slight haze in the last glass as a minute amount of sediment managed to leave the bottle. Thin white head added to the lager/pilsner appearance.
The nose was subdued: light hints of bread and yeast with a sprinkling of malt.
The taste was boring: a dry and bitter finish didn’t help the overall experience at all it didn’t even start off well. Weak and a little thin body wise also. Let’s just say we didn’t get on too well and I’ll not be having another.

More or less hoppy smell. A dry mouth, but both also evokes a bit syrupy cereal soggy, which is not pleasant. Not really unique flavor. Just a finish virtually nonexistent. Far from the standards of this style of beer. Too heavy to be easily drunk. Too bland to be enjoyed.
