Review: 33cl stubby bottle of Jessenhofke's PMPRNL, a Triple bier: 8% ABV
PMPRNL spelled out in big lettering on the bottle, representing the Pimpernelle plant, a plant that is spicy and with well known healing powers, particularly for digestive and stomach issues.
On the appearance I got a cloudy dark yellow coloured beer with a nice good foamy white head. Not bad.
Had some good lacing
The smell was very fruity, banana and orange, plus citrus, sweet with the malts and herbs, all very pleasant on the nose.
The taste was quite unusual to me, full of spices and herbs that I would not be very familiar with at all. Very interesting.
A bit sugary too, initially.
Fruity, yes get a good taste of the banana, the oranges, the lemons,
Light hops, and the alcohol is well hidden.
Alright, smooth enough, drinkable. It is a Belgium triple alright.
It is quite well balanced considering all the differing complex tastes and unique flavours, and it certainly is something different, so hats off to the brewers there.

Pale yellow colour with a little haze and a modest but steady head of soapy foam. Smell of grassy hops, herbs and bread. I have mixed feeling about the taste: i like the dry, herby and even umami flavours, but it also tastes like the brewers used so many different kind of herbs that they overplayed their hand a little: it is hard to differentiate the flavours, which makes the entity a bit bland. Mouth feel is crispy and refreshing. Could use a little less herbs, but i appreciate the effort overall. Definitely something different, it even contains garlic.

This 0.75 Litre cork and caged bottle was taken at the lovely bar/tasting room of D’elices Et Caprices in Brussels. The brew is based on the regular Jessenhofke (which has garlic in it) and has extra spices added to those already in the base beer: all the spices are listed on the back label.
Our glasses held a slightly hazy body of orange coloured beer, on top a well formed but thin white head, the third pour was a bit cloudier as the sediment left the bottle with the remaining beer.
The aroma was an interesting mix of yeasts, herbs and a sweet smell from the malts and other spices used.
The taste is a good blend of flavours, sweet and yet semi-bitter, fruity, herbal and earthy, all at the same time. It isn’t bold or brash; more of a subtle, gentle feel to the taste and mouth feel. Carbonisation was just about right and suited the beer nicely.
I had another bottle on New Years Eve and found it just as pleasant as the one I reviewed when in Brussels.
