Pours a dark chocolate brown color that appears black in the glass with a half finger mocha head that quickly settles. Spotty lacing left behind. Looks pretty viscous.
Sweet, boozy aroma with lots of dark malt and subtle smoke. Toasted with roasted dark malt, chocolate, toffee, coffee bean and oatmeal. I'm also picking up some licorice and subtle dark fruit.
Medium bodied but a bit thinner than expected with a nice balance of roasted and sweeter malt notes. Slightly smokey with hints of dark chocolate, oatmeal, toffee coffee bean and vanilla. It's also slightly spicy with licorice, pepper and dark fruit which provide a pleasant sweetness that counters the heavier malt flavors. Subtle hop bitterness in the finish. Decently balanced with a well masked ABV but definitely still a sipper.

No clue how lucky I am to be getting things like this lately. Wow. Bottle sent to me by a very kind BA. Apparently there were a few released by the brewer for promo. Served chilled to cellar temp and poured into a pint glass, this one was consumed on 06/20/2009.
The pour was very nicely done. Rich dark black in color with a small head of tan coming up and over the top that settled down gently into a thin ring around the sides. Nice side glass presentation as well, very impressively done I have to admit. Rich licorice and cocoa straight up front, very deep and complex as it rolls though. Nice mellow, vanilla notes coming up now as it warms as well as a rich, molasses and coffee aroma. Smooth, delicate, a definite dessert beer for sure, this one was coming off quite well on me I have to admit. First notes of coffee and molasses coat the tongue while a biting hop note then takes over, interesting. Dark fruits play around on the palate as dark chocolate explores and brings you down to a smooth, sweet finish. A big one for sure, but it holds its own.
Overall, very, very solid here. Needed a little more punch for me in the back of the taste, but otherwise this one was top notch for sure. I would have no issue at all with trying one again any day.

Deep dark in color with thick sticking lace. Roasty coffee notes with fig, bitter chocolate notes and a nice balance of hops to dry it out. Pretty drinkable, then again..its no session beer. Great brew from Broad Ripple...and hope that they do this again!
