Oatmeal Stout

This beer is currently the January specialty in their MBA program. Tried a pint on-tap. Poured an opaque black with a thick, tan head. Great retention - left all sorts of lace on the glass. Smells and tastes like a great oatmeal stout - hints of dark chocolate, dark roast coffee, some molasses or caramel. Deep toasted grains. Touch of the oats, with a nice finishing bitterness. Very nicely balanced. Nice, thick mouthfeel without feeling too much like motor oil. Overall, an excellently balanced and drinkable stout. Smooth and tasty - will definitely head to the Elevator for another one of these.

Had this tasty brew at Brews2 on Haymaker Tuesday, 3 Feb. Never heard of it before and as the first to review it I can see why. If it is on tap where you are though, you will notice it by the tall royal blue tap handle with silver lettering.
On to the beer...
Served in a 32oz. cup for $4.00, max volume the main concern and the head suffered. Great looking brew otherwise, black as pitch and opaque save a bit of ruby around the edges. There was a thick lace along the sides of the cup as one drank though it tended to slide back into the beer.
What I can attest to is how the beer performed in my mouth. My main experience with outmeal stouts is Samuel Smith's offering. I expected that and got a hint of it at first, but that yielded to a carmel malt sweetness balanced by something akin to roasted coffee, though there was also hints of toffee like one finds in the Flag Porter. This concoction is almost candy.
The mouthfeel was good, not what one finds in strong old ale, but fuller bodied than a porter. The carbonation is well contained in this moderately heavy beer.
This beer is very drinkable. I had 32oz. in under an hour and was so impressed i considered getting another 32oz. Sadly, I had class early this morning.
Notes: ABV not listed, but i never really felt a buzz which tells me this must be 4-5%. The one other factor which keeps the taste a 4 is that a touch of metal came in to the flavor for the last 1/8 of the beer much like Young's Double Chocolate. It's not a big deal, but it is there. I will be suggesting that they have it on tap again soon.
