Served in a standard pint, the IPA is a dark bronze with a beige head & good lacing.

The aroma is of citrus and a bit of pine. There are some grains in the background.

Am I spoiled? While the beer has a substantial malt-caramel backbone with some grapefruit and pine bitterness, everything is a bit underpowered. It really seems more like an apa.

The mouth is slick with a touch of oiliness. While easy enough to drink, I expect a bit more oomph from my IPAs.

Appearance: It arrived with a one finger head. It's dark brown and a little cloudy. Retention was okay and lacing was light.

Smell: Pretty straight forward. Plenty of hops in there. Some citrus scents (grapefruit and mango) are noticeable.

Taste: Citrus flavors provide a little sweetness to the mix. Hops are definitely the main feature. A little more malty than I would've expected from the smell. Caramel or toffee malts balance it out to a degree. There's a bit of a toasted nut flavor in there as well.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability: It's light bodied. Carbonation is good. All in all, it's drinkable. I have no idea what the abv is, but I'm assuming it's typical for an IPA. Overall, it's not bad. Worth a try if you happen to make a visit.

Had the Necessity IPA on-tap at the Oak Room in Athens, OH.

Appearance: dark amber, 1/2" head off the tap, pretty good looking beer
Smell: hops...that's about it...maybe a tad of mustiness which didn't please me
Taste: good; hoppy witha hint of some fruit flavors (a good IPA taste)
Mouthfeel: medium bodied (a little thicker than most American IPAs)
Drinkability; ehhhh, i could've had another one, but not right away; a little thick for two in a row

Was a nice Dark Amber with thick creamy head and good lacing.

Smell was dominated by grassy and floral hop aromas.

Taste was pretty much what I smelled, a nice bit of floral hop flavor with a touch of malt peaking through.

Mouthfeel had good carbonation and a light body.

Overall a good enjoyable IPA that was easy enough to drink. Not as hoppy as most IPA's out there, but still a pretty solid beer.

Part of a sampler

Amber beer with just a bit of off-white head. Sour scent. Vaguely sweet malt with a moderate amount of hops. Bit of metal in the finish. Nothing really characteristic. There might be an IPA in here somewhere, but I can't find it. Next!

Served as a sample at the Elevator Brewery. The color was copper, with a good head. The smell was fairly malty, with not much in the way of hops. The taste was malty sweet, which isn't generally expected in an IPA. Mouthfeel was fairly smooth. Drinkability-wise, probably wouldn't want too many more.

Unless I was served the wrong beer, this was not an IPA in any way. A good IPA should have that citrus hop blend; even a decent one isn't sweet! Not a good beer and I will not be having this one in the future.

A fairly delicate IPA. This brew is much less over the top in hops than many other brewers' offerings. This one is very enjoyable. It pours out an amber color with a decent ivory head that laces very nicely. The nose seems mostly of floral hops though the predominate flavor is of citrus, more grapefruit than anything else. The feel is smooth with a decent and clean finish.
