Smoked Porter - Chipotle PeppersSmoked Porter - Chipotle Peppers
Notes: In 2006, Chris Carroll, a longtime member of Team Stone, took that adage literally, proposing that we produce a one-off version of our venerable Stone Smoked Porter made spicy from the addition of chipotle peppers. We gave it a shot and found that those smoked jalapeños melded quite naturally with the smoldery peat-smoked malt that gives the beer its flavor and moniker, creating a deep, roasty quaff with a carefully restrained tingle of tasteful capsaicin heat in the finish. The marriage of ingredients was so nice that it has become an annual summertime staple, released each May in honor of Carroll’s initial idea that Stone Smoked Porter w/Chipotle Peppers serve as an artisanal alternative to the industrialized adjunct-laden cerveza billed as the perfect fluid accompaniment to the sunny season. Cheers to variety and a quality alternative to mediocrity.

Modest head production and similar head retention. Brew is a clear dark brown.

Nose carries licorice, chocolate, dark fruit, and touches of smoke and peppers.

Thin on feel and up front flavor, but both chilis and smoke quickly announce themselves quite nicely. Throughout, there's a lingering roast and char, giving hints of dark chocolate and coffee.

This is a surprisingly tasty brew. The peppers are quite nice, and balanced well with the smoke and roast.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a standard pint glass.
Dark brown/black in color with ruby highlights. Thick, tan head of foam.
Aroma-Coffee, dark chocolate, faint roasted peppers.
Taste-Roasted coffee, smoky, subtle roasted peppers provide a "tingly" bite. Very flavorfull with a sneaky spiciness and subtle warmth. Very tasty. Yum!

Pours a dark chestnut brown color with golden copper edges and a 1.5 finger beige head that slowly fades into a lasting cap/ring. Streaks of soapy lacing left behind.

Smokey roasted malt aroma with a nice chipotle pepper presence that compliments the notes of the base beer very nicely. Hints of charcoal and smoked meat along with coffee bean, burnt toast and dark chocolate. Some lactic cream, sweeter chocolate and toffee as well. Peppers become more prominent as it warms contributing to the smokiness.

Medium bodied with a spicy, peppery kick that compliments the smoked/roasted malt without becoming too hot or overpowering. The meaty smoked malt flavors still dominate with hints of burnt toast, charcoal, BBQ, bacon, coffee bean and dark chocolate. There's some sweeter malt and lactic cream for balance. Hints of lighter chocolate, caramel and toffee before more peppery heat shows up in the finish. The peppers are nicely integrated into the flavor without taking over and killing off the characteristics of the base. Peppers become more prominent as it warms but it's still nicely balanced and really tasty.

Dark mahogany body with a very thick, billowy, lightly tawny head. Light milk chocolate aroma with a whiff of beechwood smokiness. Flavor exhibits a mild, over-arching cocoa taste with a slow-burning yet not-too hot chili pepper heat that slowly evolves and builds at the finish. Medium-heavy body; silky smooth feel.

This American porter is decent enough. It comes across better with its dark malt porter character than its chili beer aspect. Mild and approachable as both a porter and a chili-flavored beer, so it should appeal to a wide audience that may what to try or indulge in both styles. Still, it may let down hardcore fans of either style with generally low-key aspects of either type of beer.

Pint glass pour and I am met with a dark brown colored ale with a decent beige frothy head with staying power.

Smokiness mucho on the first whiff. The peppers are definitely there in the aroma but rather subdued. Leather, espresso and chocolate are also present.

The taste works well. A lot of smokiness up front but there is the distinct underlining flavor of the peppers which stays well after the sip. Just a slight warming presence in the throat which I like. Light bitterness in the aftertaste but the overall flavor keeps me wanting more. As it warms, more of the chocolate comes out which only enhances the experience.

Just a tad too carbonated for my liking.

Overall I have been searching this out for awhile and glad I did. The peppers are worked in wonderfully to give it a touch of heat while keeping the smoked porter up front. Well done and I can see why this is one of Greg's favorite beers.

Smoke comes through but is not overpowering. Chipotle on backend is nice, nothing too much.

Chilled bottle into a glass.

A: Pours a dark brown body that darkens to black. My pour produces a half-finger of tan head on the beer; it breaks apart into thin clumps of foam and leaves a few tendrils of lace down the sides of the glass.

S: Roast, bitter chocolate, and coffee -- great porter aroma. The chipotle influence is noticeable; it blends well with the smoke of the base beer to produce an earthiness that reminds me slightly of wet clay.

T: Roasted grains, bitter chocolate, and dark-roast coffee lead the way. The mid-taste brings out smoke, and it transitions nicely into a finish that is dominated by a drying, earthy chipotle pepper heat. This isn't a Ghostface Killah type palate wrecker; it is a nice showcase for the pepper, with just a small amount of heat on the back end.

M: Excellent balance and integration of chipotle with the base beer. It finishes cleanly except that the heat lingers a bit.

O: $2.50 for a 12oz bottle is silly, but I had heard good things about this beer, and to its credit, it lives up to them. I'm happy I bought this.
