Copenhagen 15/1 2019. 50 cl can from Meny, Østerflled Torv, Kbh Ø. It's raining Blueberries on the can. Cute take on the movie poster from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

Pours murky Bordeaux with a pink head. Bubbly. Settles as thin, almost transparent layer of foam just managing to cover the surface of the beer. Thicker rim along the side of the glass. Very moderate lacing.

Aroma is a little subdued. Lemonade-ish, sweet blueberries, white sugar and strong tart odor rummaging in the background.

Medium strong carbonation. Thin, watery, prickly texture. A little sticky,

Flavor is lightly sweet and followed by a strong tart bitterness which is a little rough around the edges. Aftertaste is tart and quite bitter. Lingering. Semi-dry finish.

Strangely bland nose but a quite aggressive sour, tart bitterness when it comes to the taste.

On tap at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Cloudy reddish colour. Aroma and flavour of wheat and blueberries, slightly tart, with a fairly sharp bitterness in the finish.

Pours an opaque, brownish, dark purple coloration with a small, frothy head. Smells of doughy, wheaty malt, slightly spicy yeast esters and a mild but tangy blueberry note. Taste is dominated by doughy, wheaty malt and yeast esters of banana and clove, with just a hint of tangy blueberry, a light herbal note and mild booze coming through as well. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some blueberry tang and clove lingering in the aftertaste. Thick, full mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

This is certainly not to style, but then again, it doesn't really mean to be either and is actually a rather interesting modern take on the traditional Hefeweizen with a decent balance of the classic wheaty, estery notes and tangy, slighty tart berry notes, the banana esters and blueberry working together especially well, and none drowning out the other. To accomodate that, the esters are rather strong though, almost crossing over into phenolic territory with strong clove and even lightly tannic notes, actually making me wonder if this might be slightly oxidized. This is definitely an odd brew, which I can always appreciate. I think it works well enough in its own way, but is definitely a far cry from a classic Hefeweizen, also because of the relatively high ABV and light booziness.
