Collaboration with Birrificio Lambrate

The inspiration for this collaboration comes from the west coast of Africa in the region that transitions between Saharan and sub- Saharan, and source of the now world famous Roselle variety of Hibiscus. The result is a delectably hoppy and deliciously fruity take on the popular tea known in Senegal as “Bissap” (aka sobolo or zobo). Known by many different names throughout the world, Bissap tea is recognized by its lush red color. Stone Berlin Brewmaster Thomas Tyrell and our friends from Italy’s Birrificio Lambrate were inspired to develop the recipe when offered the sweet tea after a long night out in Milan. Brewed with Cascade, Mandarina Bavaria and Citra hops, Roselle hibiscus, orange peel and nutmeg.

When Stone started Stone Berlin, I was unsure if it was going the right way... having read many reviews about what they brew there is “just not the real thing”, strengthened my doubt even further. But now, with a brew like this, all my doubts are gone for good!
I remember the Berliner Weisse SB made which was awesome and this collaborative production falls into that line as well - a beer style that I like a lot. It says that it is an APA but it reminds me a lot of goses or sours for having that nice fruity tart.
First of all, I was shocked when pouring it out - not only because of its pink/red color, but also because of the fruit pulp that was in the beer! And then I smelled it... wow! The interplay between the hibiscus and the orange creates something really zesty, I loved the aroma, made my mouth water. The taste is very similar, sourness dominates but over a pale ale base so the beer doesn’t fully become a true sour (not a pucker). It is almost like a fruit beer with all the orange infused - and to be honest, it starts feeling like a great blood orange beer (which is awesome).
I loved this beer because it was exciting and refreshing to drink, almost like a real fruit juice. Good job, Stone Berlin! Way to go! Would love to drink some more sour from you guys!

Pours a cloudy, orange'ish deep amber coloration with a large, foamy head and floaters galore, making the glass look like a snowglobe. Smell is totally dominated by the hibiscus, but in a really nice way, with some grapefruit coming through as well as just a hint of nutmeg. Taste follows the nose, being dominated by flowery hibiscus and zesty citrus fruit: grapefruit, orange peel, with the hibiscus standing out particularly and just a hint of biscuity malt and nutmeg coming through as well. Finishes with a light tartness and bitterness and some hibiscus and citrus notes lingering in the aftertaste.

Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation. Wow, this is certainly different, but in a really nice way in my opinion. There is a great balance of flowery/herbal hibiscus, zesty/juicy citrus and earthy/spicy nutmeg, with a certain tangy edge, going on here that actually works out quite well, giving this a rather unique, but very enjoyable and refreshing flavor profile. I think a dash of ginger would have gone quite well with this actually.
