Canned w00tstout.
A long 7 years ago, thanks to a BeerAdvocate member, I traded a couple portuguese craft beers with a US-based user, that sent me was is today known as w00tstout 1.0. This was back in 2013 and in mid-August, I drank what was, at the time, one of the best beers I've ever had.
Until this date, I have never sipped w00tstout again due to the lack of distribution in Europe, but thankfully, one portuguese shop in Porto called Armazém da Cerveja, had it in stock, so I basically just needed to put into my shopping cart, pay it and wait for it to arrive in my doorstep.
The artwork and the cult surrounding this beer has grown big and the label is better and better with each new version. Now's the time to sip this one.
Poured into a BrewDog snifter.
A: Body is pitch black with high density. Head is brown, resembling a great fresh ristretto and has good retention.
S: The aroma is particularly good. One gets hints of milk chocolate, sweet coffee and pecan nuts, having a perfectly round sweet tone that is not too much and then evolves to a barrel aging tone of bourbon that connects even more as the corn sweetness only complements the first part of the aroma. This is quite exceptional here.
T: Taste starts off with a milky, silky tone of chocolate and coffee that is quite good. It then moves on to catch some spiciness due to the rye and finishes off with a small burn due to the bourbon. It's not perfect but damn, is it good.
M: Body density is high. Carbonation is still great (this was supposedly canned back in October). Alcohol is obviously felt and leaves a tiny burn on the throat after the sip.
O: I miss having great beer from Stone, as their european counterparts did not have much success brewing this kind of quality standards. Despite not being a fashionable brewer anymore, they still make great beers that need to be celebrated more often.
