Stone Orange Scream Hazy IPA is inspired by those classic creamsicle pops. It is brewed with vanilla and oranges, and clocks in at 8.8% ABV. When it comes to enjoying the Stone Orange Scream Hazy IPA…don’t settle! As in, don’t let the beer settle. Keep it mixed up (and confused?). But not shaken. This particular release is a creation by Kris Ketcham, Stone’s Senior Manager of Brewing & Innovation – Liberty Station. It is classic of his creative spirit. Ketcham is a 16-year veteran of Stone, having held positions on the bottling line, as a delivery driver, packaging and cellar supervisor before spending the last 8 years developing some of Stone’s most celebrated creations as head brewer at Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Liberty Station.

Draft at Stone RVA. Creamsicle? You betcha! All the essentials are right there, orange and vanilla with really nice milky notes. Too easy to drink for an 8.8% beer.

I managed to order this from Stone online at the crack of 10am Thurs 9/2 Pacific Standard - apparently sold out later that day. It's a one-batch offering so won't be appearing at the local BevMo.

Came the next day via UPS, a canned 4-pack with rudimentary but nice orange labels.

Pours a low-key neon orange with a slightly muddy look. Head is half-inch receding relatively quick. Aroma is a not noticeably authentic orange ice-cream, but not sickly sweet, real oranges right? Not citra-hop based either, so I'm not getting any dank. A bit of malt in there. Relatively low-key.

Taste is orange rind with a bitter bite, some hops and Stone IPA base. Vanilla stick very present and a bit of licorice in what seems like factory orange pulp. It's surrounding the idea of "creamsicle" but it's a 8.8% Stone IPA. I was expecting a more NW IPA creaminess which isn't where we're going here. Good orange-centric beer but expectations confounded me a bit. I'd say they dumped a bunch of vanilla and orange in a reg Stone IPA and the harsh we love fights with the cream. Not bad, but not transcendent to this user.
