My first review, will try to remember the specifics since it's been a week..
Serving: Served in a tulip(?) on tap at Sunset Grill & Tap in Boston, MA.
A: Deep brown to black color with just a haze and ring of head.
S: Malts, citrus, orange, and chocolate dominate with slight hoppy freshness.
M: Medium bodied with low carbonation.
T: First sipping the orange peel character dominates and falls back to the black IPA flavor of the base. Subsequent sips the orange peel tones down and the bitter chocolate flavor steps up, blending into what most reminded me of a swiss orange chocolate ala Lindt. Very enjoyable and tastefully represented combination of orange and chocolate flavors. Flavor does not lack depth.
O: Very pleased with this version, admittedly I've never had the original Self-Righteous Ale and at the time thought this was the original, but the tap menu specifically said with Orange Peel & Bitter Chocolate and the flavor couldn't be denied. Felt there was a nice blend between the added flavors and the base beer.
