October 25th, 2013 - This scotch ale starts strong with a syrupy, sweet and treacle-like smell. If I really dig in, I can get notes of maple, too. The palate is pretty thick, and the flavor offers a lot of hickory and smoke notes. And in an odd way, it also resembles a sweet potato casserole with the deep root vegetable sweetness in the aftertaste. Overall it has a lot in common with the oak aged Arrogant Bastard (which I haven't spotted in awhile.)

Got one on tap from a visit to the brewery, 12/I/18
A great US-interpretation of this Scottish beer, hoppier than the Scottish version, with more piney and hoppy aroma.
Sweeter toward the end, when the beer got warmer. Really malty and luscious.

Poured from a crowler filled 01/09/18 at Stone World Bistro and Gardens in San Diego, CA
Appearance - Pours clear and a deep, beautiful ruby amber with a sandstone colored, near finger's width head. Fair retention results in a mostly barren surface with a razor thin ring of suds around the edge of the glass. No lacing.
Smell - Aroma hits on notes of toffee, caramel and light, tea-like earthiness. Boozy heat emerges as the beer warms
Taste - Follows the nose. Sweet toffee with lesser caramel upfront, while light earthy bitterness adds some balance. Finish continues with the sweet toffee and low, tea-like bitterness.
Mouthfeel - Medium-to-full in body with low, tingly carbonation. Slick texture with a touch of stickiness. Dry, warming finish.
Overall - A pretty damn good scotch ale. It's got what you'd expect from the style, and it's well balanced. It's up there with Founders Dirty Bastard, IMO.

On tap at the Stone Company Store in Pasadena, CA.
Pours a clear dark copper with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, caramel, toffee, and fruit aromas. Taste is much the same with toast, caramel, toffee, fruit, and earth flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of earth bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and sticky mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with lots of solid sticky sugar qualities.
Serving type: on tap.

On draft at stone liberty station.
Darkish amber red in colour with no head.
No overwhelming smell that I noticed.
Malty sweet taste with a strong alcohol aftertaste. Slight toasted taste but nothing overpowering.
Thin mouth for a beer of this strength.
