Bottled 7/19/16; drank 8/17/16 @ the Yarchives.
Opaque brown/black appearance.
A rough pour yielded a small dark tan head; nice lace.
Orange citrus, medium roast coffee bean, cream & faint cinnamon notes in the nose.
Creamy medium mouthfeel.
Orange citrus, fresh cream & medium roast coffee bean flavors up front; fresh earth notes on the finish. A balanced, enjoyable black IPA; a satisfying take on a style I don't love.

This beer pours a dark chocolate color with a small head. The aroma offers rich pine and resin, with some roast coffee. The flavor offers rich pine, strong roastiness, coffee, and bitter chocolate. The mouthfeel is very medium. Overall this is a bit flat, without much flavor from the hops.

12oz bottle poured into a Brew Gentlemen tulip glass:
Look: Pours a nice jet black color with a dark tan head that is about an inch thick. Lacing is present and retention is pretty good.
Smell: Notes of some resinous pine, cocoa, toasty malts, and even some coffee.
Taste: Taste follows the nose for me. Very smooth as well as this is not overly bitter at all even though this is billed as an IPA. Nice amount of roastiness on this beer.
Feel: Medium bodied.
Overall: Pretty solid black IPA from Dark Horse. This is one of the better black IPAs I have experienced in the limited amount that is out there. I will revisit this brew if they brew this again next year. Hopefully they do a similar IPA variety pack again next year as all the beers in it were pretty solid.

Crooked Theratree brewed by Dark Horse Brewing Company, with an ABV of 8.50% This brew pours out a deep brown color with a nice light brown head. Kinda has the look of cola or coffee, not saying that is a bad thing. This is a deep IPA to me this is more of a stout than an IPA, but it is what it is. The smell of this black IPA is rich with roasted grians and malts. There is a slight hint of hops in the smell of this brew. The smell is really inviting. So far so good now for the taste. The taste is bold with roasted grians and malts, really rich. This brew is nice and heavy but smooth going down. A fair amount of lacing to Crooked Theratree, it lines the pint glass well. There is a lot going in Crooked Theratree. I really like this brew, the color, smell, the taste. There are no negatives to this brew. Crooked Theratree has a super nice balance to it, there is nothing overpowering about this brew. It is really hard to pick up the 8.50% ABV in this brew. This brew goes down really smooth. The month feel of Crooked Theratree is Bold , Roasted, Rich, Clean and Refreshing. This is a fine drinking brew, I would drink this on a cool autumn day. If you are looking for a rich roasted brew look this one up. Overall I'm giving Crooked Theratree a 4.75 out of 5 . I would buy this brew again. Dark Horse Brewing Company, did a super nice job with this brew.

Crooked Theratree | Dark Horse Brewing Company. Poured from the bottle into a snifter, this brew's head is 3.5 fingers thick, with solid lacing, and a body none more black.
I smell masterfully toasted malts, cocoa, and resinous pine hops.
Tastes like an exceptionally smooth version of the scent, along with a nice touch of black licorice. Not really much hops to be noticed at all, really. This is quite off-putting since this was billed as a black IPA, but whatever...
The mouthfeel is slightly above medium with mild carbonation.
Overall, I think I'll give Crooked Theratree | Dark Horse Brewing Company a 4.5. Part of their IPA variety sampler 12 pack, I'd never buy this on its own to be quite honest, Its not hoppy in the least albeit a very well-made porter. Therefore, should one's mood strike for a REAL black IPA, this simply will not do.
