Pours dark brown. Foamy, short, light brown head that is short lived.

Smells pine, roasted malts, coffee and light citrus.

Tastes rich roasted malts, light chocolate and coffee. Followed by pine and citrus. Finish is dry with pine and roasty linger. Medium body and smooth medium carbonation.

Bottled 7/19/16; drank 8/17/16 @ the Yarchives.

Opaque brown/black appearance.

A rough pour yielded a small dark tan head; nice lace.

Orange citrus, medium roast coffee bean, cream & faint cinnamon notes in the nose.

Creamy medium mouthfeel.

Orange citrus, fresh cream & medium roast coffee bean flavors up front; fresh earth notes on the finish. A balanced, enjoyable black IPA; a satisfying take on a style I don't love.

This beer pours a dark chocolate color with a small head. The aroma offers rich pine and resin, with some roast coffee. The flavor offers rich pine, strong roastiness, coffee, and bitter chocolate. The mouthfeel is very medium. Overall this is a bit flat, without much flavor from the hops.

12oz bottle poured into a Brew Gentlemen tulip glass:

Look: Pours a nice jet black color with a dark tan head that is about an inch thick. Lacing is present and retention is pretty good.

Smell: Notes of some resinous pine, cocoa, toasty malts, and even some coffee.

Taste: Taste follows the nose for me. Very smooth as well as this is not overly bitter at all even though this is billed as an IPA. Nice amount of roastiness on this beer.

Feel: Medium bodied.

Overall: Pretty solid black IPA from Dark Horse. This is one of the better black IPAs I have experienced in the limited amount that is out there. I will revisit this brew if they brew this again next year. Hopefully they do a similar IPA variety pack again next year as all the beers in it were pretty solid.

Crooked Theratree brewed by Dark Horse Brewing Company, with an ABV of 8.50% This brew pours out a deep brown color with a nice light brown head. Kinda has the look of cola or coffee, not saying that is a bad thing. This is a deep IPA to me this is more of a stout than an IPA, but it is what it is. The smell of this black IPA is rich with roasted grians and malts. There is a slight hint of hops in the smell of this brew. The smell is really inviting. So far so good now for the taste. The taste is bold with roasted grians and malts, really rich. This brew is nice and heavy but smooth going down. A fair amount of lacing to Crooked Theratree, it lines the pint glass well. There is a lot going in Crooked Theratree. I really like this brew, the color, smell, the taste. There are no negatives to this brew. Crooked Theratree has a super nice balance to it, there is nothing overpowering about this brew. It is really hard to pick up the 8.50% ABV in this brew. This brew goes down really smooth. The month feel of Crooked Theratree is Bold , Roasted, Rich, Clean and Refreshing. This is a fine drinking brew, I would drink this on a cool autumn day. If you are looking for a rich roasted brew look this one up. Overall I'm giving Crooked Theratree a 4.75 out of 5 . I would buy this brew again. Dark Horse Brewing Company, did a super nice job with this brew.

Crooked Theratree | Dark Horse Brewing Company. Poured from the bottle into a snifter, this brew's head is 3.5 fingers thick, with solid lacing, and a body none more black.

I smell masterfully toasted malts, cocoa, and resinous pine hops.

Tastes like an exceptionally smooth version of the scent, along with a nice touch of black licorice. Not really much hops to be noticed at all, really. This is quite off-putting since this was billed as a black IPA, but whatever...

The mouthfeel is slightly above medium with mild carbonation.

Overall, I think I'll give Crooked Theratree | Dark Horse Brewing Company a 4.5. Part of their IPA variety sampler 12 pack, I'd never buy this on its own to be quite honest, Its not hoppy in the least albeit a very well-made porter. Therefore, should one's mood strike for a REAL black IPA, this simply will not do.

Pours a thick dark cocoa with a 1 finger dark tan head. Thought at first this might be a stout, but it's not, just hoppier. Smells of deeply roasted malts and citrusy hops. This is one of those beers that blurs the lines between styles. Hoppy Stout or Porter? Ahhh, Black IPA!! Whatever, it's pretty good. Tastes of roasted coffee and citrus bitterness, the malts taking front stage on this one, then finishing slightly bitter. A decent brew, worth trying at least once.

Big, bold, black and bitter- its enough to turn a guy to therapy. Or, if you're a craft beer fan then Theratree is just the cure for the that kind of thirst. Dark Horse's imperial "dark" IPA carries all the halmarks of a well-built IPA, just larger than usual, darker than usual, and roastier than usual.

Crooked Theratree pours as black as tar and adorns a dense blanket of mocha froth. Shorter in its stature than is expected, the froth sports an aromatic array of burnt citrus, chocolate, brown sugar and bold roast coffee. Its taste is chocked full of roasted sweetness capturing the essence of burnt marshmallow, bitter chocolate, scorched toffee, burnt toast and deep coffee flavor.

Its roasty, toasty sweetness holds firm while the hops begin to build over the middle palate. Citrus rises to greet the baker's chocolate, carbonized molasses, walnut and espresso flavors and eventually overtaking the maltiness with its deep and resinous bitter grip on the throat. A campfire of pinecone, sap and citrus leave lasting impressions on both the palate and the mind of the imbiber in a tone that's as much of a bitter imperial stout as it is an imperial black IPA.

Rich, smooth and aggressively roasted, the taste of all-things-burnt leaves a full and lavish texture on the palate. Cut by the hops and heightening in bitterness by coffee-like roast, the beer's confusion between IPA and stout is part of the beer's charm. Still, a linger of dark chocolate and smoky citrus linger deep and broad in the after palate.

Variety 12 pack bottle to snifter. Look is black and opaque, no head at all. Smell is sweet roasty malts, slight coffee. Taste is malt forward initially, then the bitter hops kick in strong to remind you this is a black IPA. Hop character is earthy, blending well with the malt. A bit of booziness sneaks in at the end as well. Feel is well balanced, again the malt and hop tuned together. A bit light on carbonation for my taste. Overall a solid offering. Black IPA is a style that is growing on me, and this is above average

Bottled on 7/5/16. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours black with a big dark tan head that slowly falls leaving great thick retention and sticky lacing. It looks just like an inviting stout. The aromas have a ton of chocolate going on. Lots of malts. The hops are very subtle in the aroma department. The flavors are pretty bold. The chocolate leads the way once again and outshines the hops. Very roasty. Not much hop flavor, but there's definitely some hop bitterness. The hops and dark chocolate gives this one a solid bitterness. Hints of coffee too. There's also hints of pine and citrus in the mix. It's not too sweet. Solid malt backbone. Alcohol seems to go unnoticed. Mouthfeel is very nice. It's on the lighter side of full-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's fluffy and smooth. Easy to drink.

This is a solid brew. It has more stout/porter qualities than IPA qualities. I guess a "hoppy stout" is the best way to put it. Very enjoyable chocolate notes. Not bad at all.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 7/5/2016. Pours pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense dark tan head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, floral, grass, and roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops and roast/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, floral, grass, and roasted earthiness. Moderate pine/citrus peel and roast/char bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon/orange peel, pine, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, and floral/roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops and roast/bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero astringent hop/roast flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from hop/roast bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, moderately sticky/resinous, creamy/bready, and lightly chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent Black DIPA! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops and roast/bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. A really enjoyable offering.

Pours nice jet black color. Smell is of roasted chocolate, very nice. Thought the taste was a little sub par for the style, prefer good night bodacious by shorts and subliminal self rightious (rip) by stone better. The chocolate flavor didn't seem to blend well with the base ipa in my opinion. This wasn't bad but just like the citra safety meeting from this variety pack I was expecting a little more.

First black IPA I've ever had from DH. WIsh I could find more info on what it was brewed with, but one of the better black IPAs I can remember. Not necessarily something I would go out of my way to find, but would definitely drink again.
