From pentathlete as part of BIF 18, this beer came in a brown bomber with a homemade looking label. The pour was dark brown to black with almost no head or carbonation worthy of note. The body also lacked the heft Ive come to associate with an Imperial Stout, and looked a bit more Porter-ish. The smell was mild and sweet with licorice and chocolate coming to mind. The taste was sweet with rum-raisin filled chocolates and coffee cakes. Roasted barley astringency provided balance to the sweet taste. Not too many hops in this mix. The mouthfeel was warm with alcohol, but way too thin for the style. Good, but not great.

On-tap at the brewpub.
Very full (and very cold) pint glass with a swirl of tan lace. Little to no lacing of the glass. Color is black...pitch black. Opaque. Aromas are of sweet chocolate, cocoa powder, roasty-toasty malt, and some coffee beans. Flavor sees a hefty dose of chocolate syrup up front...quite sweet. This is followed by a buidlup of roasted malt and finishes with a fudge brownie sprinkled with some crushed hop leaves on top and a side of hot coffee. There's a hint of smoke that fades in and out as well. ABV shows up late, but is not overbearing...just a little warming (I'd been told by the brewer that they were shooting for an ABV in the 9-10% range). Slightly dry finish and a medium to long-lasting bitterness. Mouthfeel is really big. Thick and creamy. Full-bodied, it occupies your palate for quite some time. Very flavorful and easy to drain this pint. It got even better as it warmed.
Notes: I think this was served on the nitro line but there was barely any carbonation to this at all. I'd be curious to try this served as a true nitro and at a much warmer temperature in a glass that wasn't on the verge of frosting. I think it would make this a stellar beer.
